my crazy life

I think this photo pretty much sums up life at our house. I had taken Elodie upstairs to get a few cute photos in good light of the cute jumper she was wearing. Before I knew it little voices were gently calling screaming out my name!
crazy!

So when the kids are all grown up and can’t remember what it was like growing up……………I’ll just pull out this photo.

handmade hand me down

One of the lovely things about making things for your little ones is handing them on to the next baby. Take this sweet jumper modelled by Elodie. It’s the placket necked jumper from Last Minute Knits and I knitted it up in Charisma which was a Bendigo backroom special. See, you aussie ladies need to get yourselves to Bendigo and that backroom. I don’t lie. Ravelry details are here.

same jumper different models

Unfortunately, when the twins were babies I shrunk this little number in the wash. Then while I was clearing out wardrobes this week I found it and just in time to get some wear from it before Elodie grows out of it.

the jumper

Then I realised Elodie was wearing pants that I had made for her. So I don’t feel too bad that I haven’t been making as many clothes for my little ones as I would have liked. As you can see we had some fun accessorising. Tiffany silver teether that was given to Keira and lives safely in it’s box and pink ear muffs from obaibi.

tiffany teething rattle
Retro daddy didn’t let Keira buy pink earmuffs from Gymboree last winter and I lived to regret it as she’s been asking me for a pair ever since. They suit her sweet little face. I also love that she’s wearing a poncho crocheted by her grand mummy, my own mummy. I will treasure it so much now that she’s gone and am so happy my girls love wearing it.

sisters

Anyway, you crafters know the pride that comes from making something and seeing it worn. Now I feel like casting another placket neck jumper I love seeing it so much. It’s a lovely pattern both to knit and wear.

suzy hausfrau

The very lovely Suzy Hausfrau sent me this gorgeous book in the mail recently. And if that wasn’t enough a voucher to spend in her lovely store. Suzy, not her real name, left her job to be home and set up and run her very own online store. Well done. It’s a big decision but you’ve got to love the internet which enables us busy mums to make some money on the side. And can I just say it’s so great to see a local stockist of MillaMia books and yarn as I really love their books and style.

Keira quickly took the book off me and has ‘told’ me in no uncertain terms what I will be knitting her. Um Keira I’ve never done fair isle before so a dress might be a tad too ambitious! But I can’t decide what yarn to buy as they are all delicious. As you know I have a soft spot for everything pink and girly and I love the bright vibrant girly colours on offer like this one.

Back to the book. Wonderland is stunning. Baby to size 7 and a few size 8 in response to reader requests for larger sizes.  And since I have the other two books by MillaMia I have plenty of choice now since the complete set lives at my house. Because you can never have too many craft books. But if that wasn’t enough, the yarns are to die for. Super luxurious and something special. I love this wool/silk yarn.

Be sure to pop over to Suzy Hausfrau and have a little look. Enter her giveaway here  to win $100 voucher for her store too. Nice prize. And she offers free postage in Australia which is great! Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh I love this colour of this yarn too! I think a cute lace kerchief or little lace cardigan for keira would be in order here.

It’s a lovely store and I love seeing other aussie mums setting up their own stores so they can work at home and be a mum at home. It’s a great life. I won’t lie it’s a lot of work and late nights but well worthwhile. Mind you with all these yarns at home I’d be knitting in my free time or patting the pretty yarns. Thanks, Suzy Hausfrau. I’m going back to read Wonderland and pick what I’m going to make first.

crafty mail

Oh boy! Don’t you love it when you are psyching yourself up to cook dinner, put out the rubbish bins, tidy the loungeroom, bath the kids and you walk out the letterbox and it looks like a parcel is in there. Woohoo you know it must be for you but you totally forgot you bought something…………and now it’s here. Oh what joy when I checked the mail today. I still didn’t know what it was until I ripped open the envelope as I bought it ages ago.
nice mail today
It’s a cute sampler kit, something a little different but will look lovely in my craft room. It looks like the kits have sold out and you can just buy the pattern now. And don’t you even think about asking me when I’m going to find the time to make this. I think this might go to the ‘curl up in bed and craft’ pile.

best ever cold frittata

Now normally I like my frittata hot but this is so good cold. Retro daddy says so and he’s a little bit critical of my food. It’s one of my ‘throw together with what I have in the fridge’ dishes but it really works. And it was soooo good to eat when we were delayed on our trip to Echuca. The kids had hot chips in the backseat as they weren’t interested in it but of course that just meant more for us.

bacon frittata

best ever cold frittata

Quick and easy and great for nights when you need a quick healthy dinner on the table. Sometimes I just serve it with buttered bread for the little ones and they're happy as anything!
Recipe type: Dinners
What you'll need
  • small red onion, diced
  • 3-5 rashers of bacon, sliced
  • 6-10 mushrooms, peeled and sliced
  • 10 eggs
  • 150mls cream
  • handful fresh parsley
  • ½ -1 cup grated cheese
Instructions
  1. Saute onion in some olive oil in a frypan then add bacon to the pan. Fry until just golden and add mushrooms and saute a little longer until mushrooms are soft.
  2. In a separate bowl whisk eggs and cream together, add in bacon and mushroom mixture, fresh herbs, season with pepper.
  3. Pour into lined square/rectangle tin and top with grated cheese. Bake about 25-30 minutes in 200 degree oven or until golden on top.
  4. Eat hot or even better eat cold. So good. As you can see I made this in a foil tray lined with baking paper so we could take it away with us the next day. Just refrigerate if you're going to eat later. I also added a few frozen vegetables to fill it out like broccoli, carrot, cauliflower and you can do the same!

home day

Home day, cleaning day, pyjama day, we’re not going anywhere day. Whatever you call it – we’re having one. The roll of garbage bags is out and I am determined to work through every room and get rid of stuff. We don’t need any groceries today and we certainly don’t need anymore ‘stuff’ in this house. These are photos of my craft room in happier days.
a sunny spot to sew

tell me you have days where it just gets to you. I’ve decided enough is enough. Every room is practically bursting with stuff and there are lots of things we don’t use, don’t need, toys that are missing things, clothes that don’t fit, cupboards where things fall out (one of my worst habits) and it’s time for a good cleanout.
storage solution
I don’t think I”ll get any help from the little ones so am going to devote an hour to each room today and just get stuck in. One of the biggest jobs is my craft room aka the junk room where bags get dumped, the ironing board lives, clothes waiting to be mended live and quilts for queensland boxes are stored (update tomorrow).
trying to be organised
And why am I telling you this? Because I’m really hoping to get out some things to put on ebay like my gocco, smocking machine and more. A well overdue clear out.

Bendigo Woollen Mills – debrief

Ok well it’s no secret that I love my knitting and I love Bendigo Woollen Mills. I often share what I’ve been buying or knitting. More buying than knitting usually. So the wedding in Echuca did mean a visit to Bendigo was essential. It had been 4 years since I’d been at the Mill and it was just as enticing as ever.

the back room

If you haven’t been (you know you want to!) then the mills are located on Lansell Street in Bendigo. On the city side of the train tracks not the other side. And when you enter the gates you’ll see a little building called the Factory Shop. Enter the doors and you have wall to wall yarn.  Mmmmm, heaven. It’s all beautifully arranged and there are patterns and knitwear to check out too. But my advice is to collect your basket – really there should be trolleys for obsessed knitters like myself – and you want to head out back.

inside the back room

You see out the back of the shop is the back room. The bargain room. The place where the odds and ends, older yarns, smaller balls and excess stuff goes. And part of the fun of going to the mill is going to the back room because you just don’t know what you’ll find. You’ll find small packages for a couple of dollars and balls of wool for $16 that aren’t so much a bargain but are rare and NEED to come home with you. This trip it was all about getting things I hadn’t seen before. Like this super  soft and snuggly Shetland wool that will make lovely little cardigans for new little babies. No not mine, don’t worry I haven’t changed retro daddy’s mind yet.

for baby knits

And this is just called ‘Pure Wool’ and comes in a variegated design in 12 ply that will make the best hoodies for my little ones ever. This definitely had to come home with me. Love the bright fun colours for girls.

Mystique which is still available online and is a 16ply and will make some quick knit cardigans for my girls. I’m all about the quick knit and think I’ll do a beanie for each of my girls with some ear flaps.

There was some lovely 4ply cotton in a colour I hadn’t seen online before and will make a gorgeous cardigan or tee for my girls. At $2.50 a ball how can you say no!

And some luxury in ghost came home with me for the gaptastic cowl

and some silk supreme to try my hand at the big herringbone cowl

And maybe there were a few odd balls that came home with me too. But, that my friends is how to shop at Bendigo Woollen Mills! A mixture of the back room and the rest of the shop but 3 huge bags of yarn to keep me busy! And I’m hoping it won’t be another 4 years before I get back there. If you’re in the area or even if you’re in Melbourne it’s well worth the visit. Plus the Beechwork Bakery in Bendigo is the perfect place to send your other half and little people for a while.

my big fat country wedding

Well we’re home from our little holiday in the country to attend a family wedding. And I think we’ve come home fat! Retro daddy declared he’s gained 2 kgs over the weekend. Ouch. I blame our love affair with country bakeries. There is something so good about walking into a bakery in the country – for me it’s all about the vegie pies, neenish tarts and my all time favourite –  vanilla slice. And so we were in heaven down in Echuca. Thank goodness I don’t have any bakeries like that near me. Or I’d be in trouble. I’m also going to blame eating our annual consumption of McDonalds in 4 days. I think that has something to do with it. Or the big family dinner on Saturday night – tim tam cheesecake anyone?
models
So yes it was all about the food but really the wedding was all about family and getting together. Retro daddy has 6 brothers and sisters and we just don’t get together all that often. And there are lots of cousins to play with so my little ones are already asking when we’re going away again so they can play with them all again.
the gorgeous church
The wedding was lovely. How could it not be in such a beautiful church. My own parish church looks very ordinary compared to this beauty. And we were sitting in the front row so I managed to get some great pics and soak it all in. Why were we in the front row you ask? Because we were late! It reminded me of a scene from 4 weddings. The bride had just stepped out of the car smiling and there we come running through the church gates flying into the church late. Everyone was sitting down and we had to walk in the side and take the last seats available. We had been looking at a slow clock in the house so we left home at the time the wedding should have started. Oops.
vows
Tillie decided to have a big tantrum during the ceremony. She decided that a random group of children in the church were her cousins and she wanted to sit next to them. Retro daddy was letting her be noisy and I was giving him death stares. It had been a bad morning for Tillie. Everyone else was so excited to get into their new clothes for the wedding but she was not into it at all. She spent almost an hour pulling her cardigan off and howling. Her lovely new french cardigan. Then of course at the end of the day she didn’t want to take it off and travelled back to Sydney wearing the same outfit. You can’t win with that girl.
tillie doesn't co-operate
After mass it was onto the church hall for a lovely little reception. A great time to catch up with everyone. Elodie slept through it. Such a good girl that one. The highlight was getting most of the cousins to sit together for a photo. Oh and daddy since Finn is a Daddy’s boy.
cousins!
Now this was a big family wedding as the groom is one of 7 and the bride one of 8. Yes, I know what you are thinking. Good catholic families. Yes, you are right. I love being part of a large family especially when there is a lovely crafty lady in the mix. And that means lots of children. So thanks to some lovely girls and ladies all of the children were entertained with colouring, disney dvd’s and their own food for the whole reception. It was wonderful. So wonderful that no one wanted to come home. Even Tillie didn’t want to leave.

After the reception we had a quick break before we headed to Julie’s little town for a big dinner with the family. The restaurant put on a huge spread for us and it was just delicious. I loved that the chef had baked a lemon curd tart and sat it on the restaurant counter still in it’s pan so you couldn’t resist having a slice for dessert. My little ones had a ball with their cousins but it really was a late night and we were back in the car before 9pm to head home and get ready for the big drive home.
And that was the wedding! There is nothing like a wedding whether you’re 20 or 40 something. Don’t you agree? It’s always a special event for everyone involved. But we travelled over 2,000 kms over the weekend and today I’m taking it easy. There are suitcases and bags to empty, clothes to wash, groceries to buy, things to put away, photos of my Bendigo haul to take –  so thank goodness for school holidays. We’re staying in our PJ’s till lunch and taking it easy!
p.s I just loved being in the country. I’m ready to pack my bags and head down to live near Julie. I even had a dream that a shop opened up for me to open my own retro mummy store. Coming back into Sydney with all the traffic and crazy drivers was a bit too much after those quiet country roads.

p.p.s another highlight of the weekend – all of that coaching I’ve been giving Elodie to say mum mum finally paid off. Now she can’t stop – mum mum mum mum mum!

p.p.p.s thanks Julie for the extra photos!

our little holiday – part 1

Well we survived our first big roadtrip as a family of 6! Thank goodness for DVD players, Tangled, Princess & the Frog, Toy Story and other long movies which kept little people quiet. Couch potato quiet. Oh and happy meals at McDonalds, parks to run around, lolly snakes, mummy’s rocky road and diet coke. It actually wasn’t as bad as I thought eventhough we were delayed by an hour and a half due to a problem with the car. The new car. The car that has only done 5,000kms. Thankfully there are no problems and we are enjoying a well deserved break in Echuca.
Today we froze our little butts off getting out and about. It’s cold here at the moment. Really cold. Like tonnes of layers and then my puffa vest cold. First stop, picking up Aunty Julie to hit Bendigo Woollen Mills. Mecca for knitting obsessed people who love their wool. And it did not fail to deliver. Oh boy. $200+ later it deserves a whole blog post on it’s own. I got back into the car and told retro daddy that Julie totally embarrassed me by going crazy in there. My attempt to distract retro daddy from the 3 huge bags of wool I had just snuck into the back seat!
Mummy! I never knew shopping for wool could be so much fun!
And it’s funny how just a couple of days break from the everyday can make such a difference. We are having a great little holiday and the little ones just love being away from home and spending time with their cousins. Tomorrow is the wedding and it’s going to be a long day with full mass (yes, full mass), reception in the church hall, a little rest for a while and then a family dinner in town. I’ll be back tomorrow night with photos as I’m dying to show you all the little ones outfits and some family photos as retro daddy’s family is not small.

roadtrip tips?

Well today there are no pretty recipes or craft projects as we get ready for a roadtrip. An almost 10 hour roadtrip. But it’s for a family wedding so totally worth it. I don’t think I could do this trip if it was for anything else. But there is a nice side trip planned to Bendigo for the Bendigo Woollen Mills. I mean I’m a loyal customer so it would be wrong not to drop in and shop say hi. Don’t be too jealous. I’ll bring back photos for all of you who haven’t witnessed the joy that is the back room.
we're a bit late to the sitting up on our own party
And so you all know who has to pack and get ready don’t you? This morning I made a mad dash to the shops for DVD players for the car, snacks, diet coke, pants for Finn to wear for the wedding as he’s growing, headbands for the girls because I can’t find the new ones I bought a few months ago for the wedding (another reason why I need a big declutter) and then the girls decided that they needed sparkly handbags for the wedding too and then Tillie decided she needed to have the hugest tantrum in the magazine aisle that lasted the whole way around the shops until I gave in. I just couldn’t deal with it today.
playing
And in between all of the packing, washing, drying and last minute jobs I’m doing I hope to bake a few things to take down with us for snacks and mealtime. I just can’t do McDonalds or roadside diners more than once on a roadtrip.
what did you say mum?
On facebook I got some great roadtrip tips and would love to know your top tip! We are staying in a townhouse in town (conveniently just a short walk from my favourite bakery – ever) and I loved the idea of taking a frozen lasagne away with us so that when we get in at night we just pop it in the oven and dinner is done. Why didn’t I think of that! Great idea.
snuggling
Let me know yours. I need it. I’m a little stressed today. I decided to share recent pics of Elodie as they are much sweeter than pictures of packing for 4 children, a messy house and a frazzled mummy.

Win $100 to spend at the Target Toy Sale

Sponsored by Nuffnang
Sometimes a sponsored post opportunity comes along that is such a perfect fit and which I feel very experienced to talk to you about. The Target Toy sale is one of those. Ever since Keira was a baby I’ve been doing the Target toy sale. The kids get the catalogue and spend hours flicking through it telling me what they want. And they carry that catalogue around everywhere with them so that it ends up being the tattiest thing around.
Keira’s first Christmas in Melbourne!

I love the Target Toy sale because there are lots of toys that you don’t see all year round and the prices are so low. I’ve saved up to 50% off toys in the past and now with 4 children to buy for that’s important. I also lay-by as paying $10 or $20 a fortnight means when Christmas comes around it’s one less expense to worry about.

Keira’s 2nd Christmas!

There is always such a wide range of toys available from outdoor swing sets and trampolines to wooden toys to books to dress up, Barbies, tea sets, Fisher Price baby toys and more. I always buy all the presents for the twin’s birthday and Christmas and especially love picking up the special toys that can be hard to find like the Barbie campervan and jet.

Since this will be my 5th Target toy sale I have my system down pat. Leave the children with someone else unless they are a baby. Get in there early with my trolley. Have my list. Get what I need and a few extra little presents for other children’s birthdays. Go straight to lay-by. And be prepared to wait. I won’t lie. You can spend a long time in that queue on the first day of the sale. Last year i couldn’t wait in the queue as I was hugely pregnant, so I bought all the toys. Big mistake. This backfired on me when Keira found all the presents in my cupboard and a spare bathroom we don’t use.

checking out keira's presents

I also get a little bit stressed out (don’t laugh at me) that I might miss out or that the queues will be crazy – pregnant with the twins was another year that wasn’t good for me.

happy finnie

But this year for the first time only you can lay-by online BEFORE the sale. So although the Target Toy sale doesn’t start until the 21st July (put that in your diaries mums) from the 29th June you can go online and reserve the toys you want. You then go in and pay your 10% deposit on the lay-by. Phew. I love it! That takes out half my stress before the sale. I love it so much that I’ve already done my lay-by and just need to go into the store. Easiest Target Toy Sale to date!

ohhh presents

Here is how it works:

1. Make yourself a coffee and make sure the kids are not in the room. I say this because otherwise I have 3 jumping monkeys screaming out behind me to click on that page or they want this and that.

2. Go to target.com.au

3. Search the toys available.

4. Register your details and create your toy list.

5. Select your nearest Target store as your lay by location

6. Submit your list and you’ll then receive an email confirmation including PDF files.

7. Print the email confirmation and take to your nominated store to activate your lay-by (10% deposit required) on or before Wednesday 3 August 2011.

How easy is that! Another advantage of doing this is that you can compare prices and toys to the other big toy sales that are always held before the Target sale. And guess what? Yes! You can win $100 to spend at the Target Toy sale which I know someone will put to good use. Just leave me a comment and tell me which toy you would most like to put on lay-by in the Target Toy Sale? This giveaway is for my Australian residents only and don’t forget to include your email address so I can email the winner. Full T&C can be found here.

shortbread buttons

Well grandma betty is here and she’s a little scottish lady who loves her tea and biscuits. And her biscuit of choice –  shortbread. And don’t you even think about having her over without any biscuits in the cupboard. With my thermomix now a huge part of my life there was no way I was going to buy biscuits. And so this shortbread recipe comes from the Thermomix Everyday cooking book and the button idea comes from the May issue of Country Living (British Edition). You can easily make them without a thermomix just do it all in your food processor. Shortbread is so easy but so ‘butterly’ gorgeous.

shortbread button biscuits

100g plain flour

50g rice flour

50g caster sugar

100g cold butter, cut into cubes

dash of vanilla extract

Preheat your oven to 160 degrees. Put all your ingredients into your TM bowl and mix 10 seconds on speed 10. Then mix for 20 seconds on interval speed with closed lid position. Now don’t worry that your mixture is all crumbly. It all comes together. Tip out onto your work surface or I used baking paper then form into a ball. Now if the weather is a bit warm you can chill your dough by wrapping it in gladwrap and refrigerate it for 30 minutes or so. It’s cold here so I just worked with it straight away. Roll out between 2 layers of baking paper and cut into 5cm (or so ) rounds. Use a chopstick/skewer/toothpick to punch your holes then using a knife slide off onto a lined baking tray.

just before the oven

Bake for about 15 minutes or so until lightly browned on top. You don’t want them too brown just a nice pale shade. While hot I repunched the holes and then you need to leave them on the tray for a minute or two then slide off with a knife to cooling rack. They will crumble and break if you don’t let them cool on the tray – resist! You can do it!

shortbread buttons

And so if you don’t have a thermomix just do the mixing and kneading in your food processor for a couple of minutes until it comes together. Enjoy. And this is a great school holiday activity. The making and the eating!Next time I’m going to double the recipe because they were all gone by lunchtime!

top 20 signs you’re a craft addict!

It all starts off so innocently! You find a craft you like, you start buying a few things and suddenly the bag/box/knitting basket/shelf overflows and you need more space for your craft. Then you might pick up another craft and off you go buying more equipment and supplies for that craft and next thing you know you are taking over the house with your craft. You might be lucky to have a space dedicated for your craft (like me) but you’re busting at the seams. Oh dear. Am I talking about you? Because I know I’m talking about myself.

$2 a ball

I remember that I started knitting about 10 years ago in London and I could fit all of my supplies in one bag. Just one bag and I kept it near the couch for late night knitting.  Now, I am taking over the house and retro daddy is noticing! So I thought I’d have some fun and share this list with my fellow craft addicts out there. Tell me if any apply to you!

4. your husband/other half asks ‘don’t you have enough craft books/patterns/fabric/balls of yarn/craft’ before you head out to the craft shop/craft fair/open another parcel

There you have it, it’s not the definitive list but it sums up my life as a craft addict. Let me know if I’ve missed one and I’ll add it to the list. I’m pretty confident that some long suffering craft widows will have something to contribute to this discussion!

Win a family pass to Cars 2

Sponsored by Nuffnang

A trip to the movies, sharing some popcorn and enjoying a choc top in front of the big screen makes for one happy afternoon. And so my Finn was in little boy heaven last week when we all headed out to a special advanced screening of Cars 2. So special that we had to hand in our mobile phones at the door in case we were going to take photos or videos of the movie.

 cars 2

If you like spy and action movies then you are going to love Disney-Pixar Cars 2. Think James Bond meets Cars and you have Cars 2. From the moment the movie starts there are thrills and spills and some huge action scenes. My little ones don’t sit down for long so all of them sitting through the movie is one big achievement in itself. But they love Disney movies. And so they all loved Disney-Pixar Cars 2 and especially Finn. He hasn’t stopped talking about it.

Cars 2 Publicity Still

Disney-Pixar Cars 2 is based around an international grand prix so you travel around the world with the cars which was a lot of fun. Keira has decided she wants to go to Paris which I fully support while I was getting a bit nostalgic for Tokyo. My favourite scene in the whole movie has to be using the toilet in Japan. Hilarious. The animation for Tokyo and the countries is so realistic you need to remind yourselves that this is an animated movie!
The little ones favourite character was definitely Finn McMissile, secret agent. Me, I have a real soft spot for Mater. He steals the show with his total country bumpkin antics. And take Mater away from his sleepy town of Radiator Springs and put him in glamorous cities around the world and you have some very funny scenes. And travelling around the world also means lots of international characters to meet including an Aussie car. Yes! Meet Frosty……voiced by our very own Mark Winterbottom!
There are some cute messages for the little ones to take home like friendship, not judging a book by its cover, the environment and playing fair. And some humour for the big kids and adults too. In fact this is a very slick movie and storyline just as you would expect from Disney Pixar.

But not wanting to spoil the fun for you, my lips are sealed about what else happens in the movie. Cars 2 is in cinemas now and I know this will be a big hit in the school holidays, and that we’ll be taking Finn along again. Thanks to Disney and Nuffnang, I have 2 family passes to Cars 2 to giveaway. All you need to do is tell me your favourite Disney movie scene of all time. This giveaway is for my Australian residents only and full T&C can be found here.
p.s Just be warned that when you watch the movie trailers – your children will go nuts beside you and insist on watching it again and again meaning this blog post took me a long time to write.

Georg jensen love

This is my engagement ring. It’s a Georg Jensen fusion ring. I love it and wear it everyday. It really is perfect and I often receive comments on it from strangers. I feel the luckiest girl in the world. Or so I thought.

1 of 30

Recently, retro daddy came home and said ‘heh, I was on the plane today and saw in the magazine that there is a new georg jensen fusion ring’………..I don’t know why on earth he told me.

because at a smidge under $20k I can pretty much tell you I won’t be getting this anytime soon. Ever. When I joked that perhaps the ring would be cheaper than another baby (please know that I am joking – my love of babies is much more than my love of girly stuff) well he said that maybe for my 40th birthday? Woohoo I got so excited for a few days until I realised that this will coincide with keira moving to a new school and the start of big school fees x 4. So I’ll keep admiring it from afar. But do tell me something frivolous that you would love…………….
