Crafty Christmas Idea 6…pegs

well not your washing line pegs…I went a little bit crazy buying 6 packs of scrapbooking pegs today at Lincraft but how cute are they…I’ve just used cotton yarn here but you could also use twine or ribbon…..

you could hang cards, letters, stockings or use them on cards and presents…

and since yesterday marked the start of December the tree went up….I put up the tree with my little helper Keira who took off more than went on but is now happy to leave ornaments on….and the babies are just fascinated by it

Crafty Christmas Idea 5…brown paper packages

If you’re going to make a lovely present you might as well wrap it up beautifully and if you bought something then you might as well wrap it up all crafty!!! I’m ditching the bright and cheap wrapping paper this Christmas to go all natural with brown paper and festive trims…I’m happy with the look as its a huge improvement from my normal wrapping efforts. Ribbons and letters came from Spotlight and ribbons galore with my brown paper coming from Big W at THE MALL!!!!

wearing a baby

Earth mother I am not. Keira was breastfed, cloth nappied, slept in our bed till she was 2 (not so much co-sleeping but rather the only way to get sleep) and vegetarian until she discovered sausages and cocktail franks (to the point I have to put them out of her reach after a few) but life for the twins has meant disposable nappies, formula and I’ll just do my best when it comes to food time……but I do think I’m getting the hang of this whole sling thing….keira just hated it and when I came home from the hospital the babies were swimming in this sling but now I quite like wearing one of the babies so I can do my usual housey stuff …..this could be as earth mother as I get with them….oh and those 2 little piles on the floor are keira’s books which she loves to scatter around the house!

and look what I came home to this morning…its been a while since I got a huge bunch of flowers…oh no wait only 4 months ago when the twins were born and we ran out of room to put all the flowers…anyway these are so beautiful and from our mortgage broker as a house warming present…um I can’t see a bank sending us flowers for having a mortgage with them!

Crafty Christmas Idea 4…yo yo hairbands

Well this was my first attempt at yo yos and I’ve seen better (way better actually) but at least I got my yo yo makers out of their plastic…I used the large Clover maker and you don’t need a yo yo maker to make one but I’m all for gadgets!

they are quick and easy to make and I just added a button and attached them to the hair elastic with some stitches at the back…keira wouldn’t take this pink one out of her hair all day and kept hiding the other pink one from me…

I whipped these up in an afternoon and they make cute additions to presents and would be easy enough for a primary schooler to make up…I plan on making another batch over the weekend and perfect them a little….

Crafty Christmas Idea 3…button boxes

Keira is teaching me a lot about what little girls like…crafting, buttons, pink, dress ups, ribbons, dolls and accessorising, amongst other things!!!!!! I also need to keep her very busy so decided it would be fun to make some cute pressies for her little cousins. We got some buttons out, little bead containers (about $1.80 each from BigW) and some hat elastic (shirring elastic works really well for bigger kids who you trust with a needle)….

and voila….we made a button box for each little girl so they can make their own bracelets and necklaces. We’ve also made something cute to go with them (but thats Crafty Christmas Idea 4 tomorrow and you’ll just have to wait). This is such a great activity to sort out the colours and put them in the little compartments and kept little hands busy for some time.

the only problem was that keira insisted on keeping all the pink buttons to herself and telling me ‘mummy no pink, pink is mine’, ‘no mummy don’t have da pink ones……’ so when a little miss wasn’t looking mummy had to sneak some pink buttons into each box…

The Mall…….

Firstly it seems I need to clarify something for someone out there….our shopping centre is called __________ mall and everyone around here just calls it the mall…always have always will. Someone out there felt the need to shout it out to me that in australia we call them shopping centres not malls….. didn’t your mother tell you that its not very nice to shout and I seem to recall my mother telling me if you don’t have anything nice to say don’t say anything at all. So if you’d like to leave a comment please use your name and please be nice because I’m just a nice person.

Crafty Christmas Idea 2….butterflies

I nearly binned this silver tree….despite it being our first christmas tree when we were a married couple in our little flat pre-kids!

I saw the butterflies in this months better homes and gardens hanging on a mirror but I love them propped up in the tree….all you need is cardstock, brads (or george’s ha ha ha ), scissors and a butterfly template……trace and cut out your butterflies, place 2 together and fold them down the centre and put your brad in the middle and voila…pop them anywhere and everywhere…oh and I used plastic for the template and it was so easy to trace around and then cut out the butterflies!!!!

They could also make a great present for a little girls room….and keira wants lots and lots of pink ones all around her room….

Crafty Christmas Idea 2

I love wreaths at christmas time…I ohh and ahhh at them in magazines but am never brave enough to do anything with greenery or berries which is why I love my fabric wreath so much. You just need a bamboo hoop and fabric strips and thats it….cut your fabric into strips and tie around your hoop…um pretty easy….so easy that I made 3 last year and gave 2 away and now wish I had them back to decorate my house.

If you’re into the whole greenery or natural looking wreath I found some ideas here, here and here….

Crafty Christmas Ideas…..

Well its almost December and that means the busy lead up to Christmas has begun…..I am avoiding any trips to the mall as its already packed and finding a car park is near on impossible (let alone taking 3 little people out with me). But I absolutely love love love Christmas and am always a huge baker at this time of year but this year I really want to expand the range of goodies I churn out to include as many decorations and presents as I can and stay away from the mall.

I hope you’ll enjoy my Crafty Christmas ideas….today I want to share with you some Christmas stockings which are so fun to hang and fill with little lovelies for your own little lovelies. I made up this stocking in a couple of hours and you can go as simple or as fancy as you want. It would be just as easy to whip up a cute linen stocking or one out of some bright christmas fabric….just remember to make one for each member of the family…I’ll be stuffing mine with chocolates, hairclips and jewellery for keira and some cute toys and teething rings for the bubs.

My pattern comes from Cleckheaton Celebration Days Vol. 2 (I’ve tweaked it and made it bigger as well as embroidered names on) but I’ve found patterns in the latest issue of Yarn(issue 12), Home Beautiful, here, here, here and here. If you’re on ravelry there are pages and pages of free patterns too.

24 days of crafty christmas at retro mummy starts now

well I’m happy to bring you 24 days of easy peasy Christmas crafts that anyone can do to have a handmade christmas this year……..I’ve got knitting, crocheting, sewing, stitching, baking and jamming all covered.

today I’m showing you how to do an easy christmas wreath…I found this design at better homes and gardens magazine last year. You’ll need a bamboo or wire wreath from your craft store, fabric scraps in a range of colours…think traditional green red and white or maybe linen and red would be lovely too. Just cut your scraps into 2-5cm wide pieces and knot around your wreather….add a bow or maybe something else festive and voila its ready to hang on the door or giveaway.

girls and their buttons

Keira is currently obsessed with buttons and jewellery so a big bag of buttons from Spotlight, thin elastic and a needle make for a craft activity with mummy and a girl who thinks she is very ‘bewdaful’

but take note that once a toddler has had enough of playing with buttons there is no civilised act of putting buttons back in the jar, no its more of a frenzied throwing and chucking of buttons around the room with arms and buttons going everywhere.

taking better photos

I’m sometimes so embarrassed with the quality of the photos on my blog so now I’m on a mission to take the time to take better photos!!! Today I decided to play around with the macro function which is the little tulip icon on your camera…..first up was keira up close and personal complete with a bit of muck on her face.

and here is my absolute favourite flower, the classic and very retro hydrangea…

I received this lovely plant today from retro daddy….

he was a right old cranky bum this morning and walked in this afternoon with this beauty and all was forgiven

If I had my way I’d have a garden and house full of hydrangeas….

hexagon crochet blanket

well inspired by some lovely crochet blankets on ravelry, I decided to make a start on some hexagons for this pattern which I’ll be doing as a baby blanket (don’t think I can manage over 100 hexagons)…the pattern comes from a super cute Japanese crochet book called Crochet Motif Item.

I’m having some teething problems, as one would expect as a novice crocheter, getting the last round started and these look nothing like the blanket but I figure once they start to be sewn together the shapes will look better. I am, however, proud to have learnt how to read from a japanese diagram which wasn’t as hard as I expected and here is one days progress. I’m also waiting for some more cotton colours from bendigo.

And I’m still laughing at all your blonde moments and I’ll do all giveaway draws on sunday so if you haven’t commented there are 3 in total and I’ve got a huge pile of knitting and sewing books to be listed over the weekend.

banana bread and babies

well it feels like a weekday here with retro daddy in the office all day and me on the homefront (as usual)…..I quickly whipped up some banana bread to sweeten my day and then gave half away to retro grandmummy and grandma betty which I’m now regretting but I think it sweetened their day too….heres the recipe courtesy of Donna Hay

130g butter (soft)
1 cup brown sugar
2 eggs
2-3 mashed bananas ( I used 2 huge ones today)
1tsp vanilla essence
1 1/2 cups plain flour
1 1/2 tsp baking powder
1/4 cup maple syrup ( I think this is what makes this fabulous)

– beat butter, sugar and vanilla till light and creamy. Add eggs and mix well followed by mashed banana then flours, powder and maple syrup. Pour into lined loaf tin and bake for 1 hour in 160 degree oven and cool in tin for a little while….mmmmm so moist and my favourite banana bread recipe to date

I also managed to get my babies to pose as so many of you have been telling me how you love to see how they’ve grown

and now they are smiling on cue….ohhhhh makes it all worthwhile

ok back to some destashing later tonight I think….
