church + cinnamon rolls

Firstly, thank you from the bottom of my heart for all of your beautiful comments yesterday. I’m determined to reply to each and everyone of you to say thank you and I really hope you enjoy the issue. I’ve kept it a pretty good secret, don’t you think?

And so it’s Sunday. For some people that means sleep-ins and relaxing but to me Sunday morning means one thing – getting 3 little people fed, dressed in their Sunday best and out the door in time for 9am mass. No sleep in’s here and I’m always so happy when we arrive and the music hasn’t started meaning we’re early (no such luck this morning, late again).  Here is Keira this morning with her pretty new hairclips from Gymboree…..

So after church today I knew it was time for some baking. And don’t you love it when you think you have all your ingredients and I discovered I was missing cinnamon, only like an essential ingredient for the cinnamon rolls I had planned. And a warning if you let your children help you – be prepared for the mess! Flour…….EVERYWHERE

baking is messy

Meanwhile, Retro Daddy was still a little concerned that I was baking 40-50 scrolls and that we would have to eat them all.  I assured him I would give some away to family and friends during the week but I must admit the dough mixture was huge and I needed to upsize bowls twice as my big tupperware mixing bowl just wasn’t big enough.

I really liked the tip about using aluminium trays to bake them in and then pop them in the freezer or give  away. The trays cost a couple of dollars at the supermarket for a pack of 3 and fit 12 scrolls nice and neatly, then stack up in the freezer easily.  But if you have room in your freezer you might be hard pressed to give these babies away because I think they’ll be perfect when you need a morning tea or special treat for breakfast. So here they are as I’m filling up the trays…….

filling up the trays

and here is how quickly we almost demolished one whole tray for afternoon tea. Oh my they are so good. Retro Daddy was coming back for seconds, thirds….and well let’s just say he just loved them. Worth the time and baking……..

we ate the rest of the tray in one sitting

and let’s get a nice close up…..mmmmmmm……so yummy. A few tips would be to start them before 12 o’clock so that they are coming out of the oven just in time for afternoon tea, have all of your ingredients out and ready to go, use your biggest mixing bowl, melt 2 x 250g butter sticks when you’re rolling out your dough so you have it all ready and lastly have a nice stack of fresh tea towels out to cover up the dough and then the rolls when they are in their tins. I left out the coffee as I know retro daddy and the little people don’t like it so my icing was a bit paler than the recipe.

Lots of time (and washing up) went into these but oh so worth it! I definitely think they’d be a winner at your house………..you can find the recipe here by Pioneer Woman

  2. YUM!!!! YUM!!! YUM!!!

Going to find them now…And thinking babout adding them to Aden’s 1st brithday food list!

  3. They look divine!!!
    Definitely one to try.
Might save this one for when Drew gets home though.

  4. Yummy! I’ve been wanting to make these for ages – ever since I first saw them on PW’s site. I might just make some this week with the kids while they’re still on school holidays :)

  5. Oh they do look good. My sister used to make a microwave version a few years ago and they were delicious too. I dont think I would need to make so many though although I am sure my family would love to eat them all up. You would have enjoyed your afternoon tea.

  6. They look great – nothing like a messy kitchen after cooking to clean up:)

  7. Did you cut down on the amount of icing used? In your pictures it looks like you’ve put a reasonable amount on, unlike the originals :-).

  8. OH MY GOODNESS…they look so yummy. I love the tip about the foil trays. I have a stack in the cupboard for frozen lasagne/quiche and I’m going to go roll crazy this week and fill them all up for the freezer. Yummo.

  9. YUM!! I think I need to make those right now, but I’m pretty sure I don’t have the ingredients…..and I’ve stayed home from church tonight to rest up with a cold so I guess I should think twice about that. But they look so good!!!

  10. How can it ‘not be yummy’ with a PDub Recipe?

  11. Thanks Corrie. Yours look yummy & make it tempting to make a batch next weekend.

  12. Those look way too indulgent! I have a similar recipe that we all love….

  13. I think I can smell them…they look so good!! I think I will be making half the recipe sometime this week. Thanks!!

  14. oh my they look delicious! might just have to get my hands on that book. and what a great idea with the trays never heard of that will have to give that a shot also! : )

  15. My son and I made that recipe at Xmas time. We switched out the icing too. They were awesome. One tip I got from reading the comments to the recipe online was to use softened butter and spread it on the dough rather than using melted butter. It cut down on the mess quite a bit I think!

  16. Those look wonderful Corrie! At what point do you freeze them? After they have risen and just before you pop them in the oven? And do you have to thaw them before baking? I’ve baked cinnamon rolls for years and always wanted to try freezing so that I could make them for breakfast and not have to get up at the crack of dawn.

  17. Oh my goodness – these are amazing. I drop by a lot and do enjoy your blog – can’t sew of course but rather like to think about learning one day! Have to get over the scars of the Grade 8 sewing term and the skirt nightmare….! But baking I can do and these are divine. Thank you for the recipe… and the hint about pioneer woman. Ann x

  18. Your cinnamon scrolls look very yummy, I may have to try this myself!

PS I often think you should change your blog name to Supermummy not retromummy!
    Enjoy your week!

  19. They look delicious! On my “baking to do list”…
Yeah, no sunday morning sleep ins for me either. 8am mass + 1 hr drive = 530am wake up for me! Somehow I still manage to get the kids ready with some help from hubby…although we rarely make it on time.
