day 13 of our 2nd kitchen renovation

I’d also like to call this post…..almost there day! Today was a busy day….and I was up at 6 on my own with the little ones ready to go. We had the electrician, tiler, fridge delivered, plumber in at the end of the day and then Michael the lovely kitchen guy came to do his little inspection.

I was asked this afternoon is it what I imagined and I have to say that it is better. I always knew this kitchen was going to be bigger than the last one. I had more space to play and no building work meant a bit more budget too.

Today it really all came together and with a bit of painting, a good clean, the plumbing to the fridge and then we are really done.

oh yes and the oven finally found a home! I actually think it needs to come forward a smidge but it’s so great to see it in a space and not in the middle of the kitchen and on a piece of foam. Oh the oven was a big source of worry in this kitchen but I always knew it would be worth it.

More photos to come over the weekend and oh the joy of patching the ceiling and painting for retro daddy.

and yes there will also be a complete ‘everything you wanted to know about my kitchen post’ coming up too! And plenty of little trips from me into the kitchen to admire it some more. And do I have the best kitchen guy or what? Look what is in my fridge for the weekend……………………………

Thank you Michael🙂

day 12 of our 2nd kitchen renovation

Well it might only be day 12 on the blog but it feels like a lot longer when you’re living through it. And I’ve been a bit quiet but trust me there has been plenty going on behind the scenes….we’ve done a school open day, retro daddy has been away for work then came home then flew out again (I’m exhausted!), emerson decided to swallow some apple scented shower gel this morning that required a call to the poisons information centre, I’m half way through knitting a baby kina, I keep falling asleep getting the kids to bed each night, I’ve been running up and down the stairs to the kitchen and just trying to keep on top of everything.

Thankfully there has been some action in the kitchen with today being caesarstone delivery day. Just one day out but I didn’t mind at all. Everything kind of stops and waits for the caesarstone to be installed and then everyone finishes off their jobs and the job is finished.

The colour is snow, exactly what I put in my last kitchen and I love it. It keeps the kitchen simple and classic and my only issue with snow is that you can see streaks and need a bottle of windex under your sink next to the gumption the wonder cleaner that will get anything (and I mean anything) off your caesarstone.

It makes the kitchen look perfect. The oven was worrying me last night but I know that I need to stop worrying about the oven and have faith that it will all work out and look amazing and a few of the tradespeople will hopefully be sliding that baby into place tomorrow.

Until then…………………….I hope you enjoy these latest photos. It finally is starting to feel real and that I will actually be cooking in this space. And I love this photo before I whisked her out of the room and closed the door.

keira has a knitted tee

Every crafter knows that satisfaction when a project is finished. I mean really finished, not with just a little thing to do but finished and ready to go. That is how I’m feeling today with the buttons sewn on this little knitted tee for keira.

Keira chose the colours herself and I think she did a gorgeous job.

this is a test knit (I will be sure to tell you when the pattern is released soon) and I knit it in Bendigo Spring Cotton.

Keira loves it, I love it and it was lovely to knit. That makes a it a winner with me. And I might have cheated and taken the photos in lovely light last night before the buttons went on……………….

Ravelry details are here………………………

Keira’s confirmation day

What a day! Today we celebrated Keira’s confirmation and it was a celebration. So many proud parents and families and gorgeous children filled our church today…..and Keira was one of them. I got a bit choked up whenever it was time to sing, I’ve always looked forward to the time that the little ones would make their sacraments…we’ve done our fair share of baptisms and today was so special. And I couldn’t ask for a sweeter girl than Keira.

It’s a pretty special day when the Bishop comes to visit and I was trying to get finn to show some excitement with all the colours and garments that the Bishop had on. Slight drama when keira had a seat right near the front only to find out that row was reserved for readers so she got bumped to the back of the church at the last moment. There were tears but it was great to get a photo without the rest of the parents standing around so it all worked out but it’s hard to be 7 and all of that excitement. But it all turned out perfectly.

And it was so lovely to get a photo with the Bishop afterwards. He was just so lovely and friendly with everyone……………and he had a busy day with 3 confirmations at our church today.

We had a few photos with keira’s little friends, we tried to get a good photo of all of us………you know how it goes, no one wants to sit still and so and so…………………….

When we got home I went all out with the food…………..no I’m just kidding. The kitchen isn’t finished, the stovetop doesn’t work and it’s an effort getting the house immaculate and 5 children beautifully dressed and out the door. Keira turned out dining table into a very special table with her baptism candle, photo, statues and cards.

So we kept it simple and also had a quick trip to the patisserie this morning for a few little treats and a trip to the frozen aisle of the supermarket. Now the cake is a white chocolate and dark chocolate mousse cake with ganache and white chocolate curls from Ganache patisserie and a total winner. I had intentions and a few pinterest searches for confirmation cakes but next time, I’ll pace myself. Plenty more sacraments ahead of us and opportunities for holy cakes. But this one was totally gluten free and totally delicious. Half the cake is in the fridge and I’ll be counting down till dinner time and another slice.

and keira had a bit of holy jewellery to show off…..she adores her multi-coloured rosary beads (we bought them here because I know you’re going to ask where! I need some) and I’m going to teach all of the big kids how to say the rosary with me. Taking keira’s confirmation group and learning all about confirmation all over again has given me a deeper appreciation of the beauty of the catholic church and the traditions. I remember the little holy cards and medals that my aunty marie (who was a nun) would give us when we visited her in the convent. What an opportunity to bring up our children with something else that the modern world doesn’t offer.

And today was a great day to think about our own confirmation and faith and a day to be proud of our Church and what we are teaching our children. I won’t lie to you and say that taking our family to mass each week is an easy job. It isn’t but days like today make me stand there proudly knowing that I’m giving my children the opportunity to have a relationship with God that I was offered and raised with. It’s like having someone who is your friend for life and no matter what happens you always have your faith to comfort you and remain with you.

p.s in our parish and diocese we do confirmation in year 2 and next year reconciliation and first holy communion. It is apparently going back to early teachings of the Church whereby confirmation was confirming your baptismal promises before making the rest of your sacraments.

p.p.s I don’t know who this girl is. Surely this isn’t my tillie?

p.p.s a big thank you to our aunty kate who was keira’s sponsor and grandma jill who also travelled up from melbourne for the day.

day 11 of our 2nd kitchen renovation

I love being able to share a bit of progress with you all……..and just so that you know, you are usually getting to see the pictures and how it’s looking before retro daddy does. So there you go. Life is so busy at the moment so it’s one less thing to worry about when I have a blog post for the day. Today it was the plasterer’s turn to pop in for a visit and work some magic.

In our last kitchen we just had a gap above our cabinetry but wow this has made a difference having a cornice put in around top. I just love how it really finishes off the cabinets.  Keira makes her confirmation tomorrow and it would have been so fabulous to have lunch in the kitchen but we can show off the progress and just enjoy it.

We had a slight drama with the caesarstone but thankfully Snow will be back in stock next week and the schedule is out by a day but what is a day when you get your first colour choice so we’re all good and can’t wait to share more photos with you next week.

oh and hopefully I can rescue elodie from the room….lots of cupboards to open and close. Emerson loves to do the same too and there are great acoustics in there too.

day 9 & 10 of our 2nd kitchen renovation

Well now we get to the good stuff……..the cabinets are in and cupboard handles are on. This is much more exciting than looking at the kitchen after a coat of paint. Now I was going to be a bit mean and drag it out with day 9 of just cabinets but here we have both day 9 and 10 progress shots in the one post. It’s also kind of nice to see the morning sunlight in the kitchen for the day 9 shots and the late afternoon sun coming in after 6pm for the day 10 shots.

I was shooed out of the kitchen until the mantle was just right. It really is just what I wanted….something a little traditional but not too traditional or over the top. I wanted to really show off the oven space and I think it adds a nice little classic touch.

Can I just say that going from all brown and yellow to shades of white and grey has made the room brighter and also bigger. It’s just a gorgeous gorgeous space and I can’t wait to get in there………..

the caesarstone was measured at 4.30pm where I was advised that they are all out of snow. Come on people, why are you all using Snow….that’s my colour. And there really isn’t something close to it in the caesarstone so looks I might be doing another stone brand in a similar shade to snow to get the right look. Thank goodness!

So now we’ll sit around and wait for the stone to arrive and then it will be a flurry of activity to get everything finished and get cooking!!!!

More to come next week………………………..

my model has gone back to school

In about an hour or so (assuming that I ignore the washing for a little while) this little knit will be finished. Unfortunately school is back and my model has gone. I got a lot of knitting done yesterday in the hope that I would finish it and get it on her but it just wasn’t to be. So at least I can do the right thing and block it first and then it get it on for some photos.

I love school holidays and I find it oh so hard getting back to routine.  Keira was out of bed at 8am and I still hadn’t made her lunch and just wish we could stay in holiday mode for a little longer. Back to lots of time driving everyone around, school, preschool and activities and missing them. I miss keira so much when she’s at school and so do all the kids!

I’ve enjoyed this little test knit and will share photos when it’s on my model tomorrow but had to share the ‘almost finished something’ photos with you today.

I used Bendigo Spring Cotton which is gorgeous as it has a bit of lycra which helps keep the shape. I hope they don’t discontinue it on me anytime soon because I just love knitting through summer and it’s great for kids as you just chuck it in the washing machine and it dries fast too. I’m all about the easy wash and dry clothes around here.

So stay tuned and all going well I’ll have some model shots tomorrow…………………and how pretty is the picot edge going to be.

Day 8 of our 2nd Kitchen Renovation

We have cupboard handles! Now you can go to Bunnings or the local hardware store and select cupboard handles or you can have your heart set on a particular type of cupboard handle and search and search and then end up at the store where you bought them for the last kitchen renovation.  And that is what I did. They aren’t the cheapest of the handles out there but they are exactly what I wanted and something as small as the cupboard handle that you use can have a big difference in your kitchen (new or old!).

I probably saw these a few years ago in a home beautiful magazine………………and I knew I had to have them as they were totally hamptons/american style. I couldn’t find them last time and wasn’t sure that I wanted different handles for drawers and cupboards. But I am happy to say that I have them here and ready to go for installation this week. You can find them here and here at Mother of Pearl & Sons Trading who have a store in Sydney and also Melbourne. Another great place for handles and kitchen/renovation supplies which I like to use is Restoration Online.

I can’t wait to share more with you. There will be lots of action with the installation of cupboards and then the caesarstone gets measured and then it gets really quiet for a week just hanging out waiting for the caesarstone to arrive and then it gets really busy again with all the trades and people coming in to finish off their jobs.

Day 7 of our 2nd Kitchen Renovation

OK so I know that it’s been a little bit quiet around here with the kitchen photos but we’ve been waiting for the kitchen cabinets to arrive before installation next tuesday. Retro daddy has been away for business (and looks like he’ll be doing lots more of that – insert sad face) so there has been no painting, that fun is saved up for this weekend. And he’ll be painting the skirtings and trims around the cabinets.

Those big long doors are for my double pantries. Yes that’s right, pantries not pantry. I’ve managed to put 3 doubles into this kitchen as I really needed more storage after doing our last kitchen. With one spare wall gracing our kitchen I decided to put the fridge and 2 pantries along it. And then at the other end of the kitchen is another pantry. I’ll probably use the two next to the fridge for food and the other one for platters, appliances and big stuff.

I thought we had drama with the kitchen cabinets, when they arrived they appeared to be glossy not a matte finish but turns out that was the just the full sun in the morning and actually by the  afternoon light they were looking like our last kitchen.  Those 3 little cupboards there are to go above the oven with a small/modest/not too over the top mantle which will have the rangehood hidden underneath. I wanted something a little bit different but not too traditional that it might be off putting if/when we sell the house.

And we have a dishwasher……………..very exciting. 18 months of washing dishes by hand is about to come to an end. I went with the Samsung as it had great reviews, an adjustable top tray and was priced middle of the range. I did start out looking at the basic dishwasher models but they all seemed to come with criticisms of glasses falling over and a few problems like that so worked up a bit in price without going over $900. I’ll let you know what I think about it.

We’ve had a few dramas with the oven but nothing an email to the owner of the business didn’t sort out and we’re all good. The oven was finally delivered and I’m going to put all the drama behind us. I was like a kid at Christmas waiting for it to arrive and I always knew that it would be worth it. The oven is an ESSE EC2i which is an electric range cooker with an induction cooktop. The induction top is under some big stainless steel hob covers which give it a traditional look. It is a big investment, I won’t lie and I’ll devote a post to the oven once it’s in and running but once I started looking into the range cookers there was no turning back.

I do think that when ordering a big heavy cooker like this one that you factor in ahead of time and ask those important questions about delivery. How will it arrive, who will bring it into the house and move it into place and ask all of those questions at the time you order and then confirm those details again. Unfortunately installation is not an option if you live interstate so at the moment the oven is on some foam and retro daddy is going to find a trolley to help get it into position next week with the tradespeople. But boy it is beautiful.

And that my friends, was day 7……………………

holiday knitting

I love school holidays….I know not everyone shares my love but no early starts (oh except for today when the appliances arrived at 7am and I was still in bed), no school run, no activities, no routine…just doing our own thing. And that means getting a bit of time for my knitting while the kids play. I just bring my knitting with me and then put it in a high place when I head off to do something else. We also have a week of swimming lessons and with the exception of wednesday when I’ll have all the kids with me I’ll be knitting away and watching the kids in the pool (see that knitting while watching tv is a great skill with many applications).

At the moment I’m doing a test knit for someone on ravelry here and it’s fun to see my progress via my instagram pics. Keira was only too happy to model it and hopefully I’ll have it finished this weekend. Super cute little cookie stitch marker was a find on etsy a few years ago, we were moving house and I tucked them all away and then discovered them recently. Super cute but you’ll still finding me using safety pins when I need something quick and on hand.

It’s been a while between test knits for me…..the other test knit I did was when elodie was a baby here. I am now thinking about making a few of these for people who’ve just had babies……somewhere in between the handmade goodies that I want to make for christmas this year. Don’t laugh, I always start out with good intentions…………..don’t we all.

Happy knitting everyone………………….

edited to add that I’m a failed test knitter! I’ve done the join in the wrong place on the yoke and it should be at the shoulder seam……………insert pretend crying. I’ve decided to soldier on and finish it and then do another one with the correct placement of the buttons and buttonholes.

Day 6 of our 2nd Kitchen Renovation

Paint! It’s been all about the painting. Retro daddy has been in there painting up a storm with the Dulux Vanilla Quake half strength on the walls. He hasn’t done windows or trims yet but I think you’ll agree that it makes a huge difference. Some of my readers who have been here a while will know that this paint is my all time favourite. It’s a pale grey and just looks lovely and is throughout all of the living areas of my house.

A lovely reader asked about the lights. No we won’t be keeping the lights. I’ve got 3 glass bell shaped pendants to go over the island (I might just use 2 depending on how it looks once the kitchen is in) and about 8 downlights to light up the room.

A bit of a quiet week with things just arriving this week and hopefully the trims will get painted too.

Day 4 & 5 of our 2nd kitchen renovation

It’s been all about the tiles for the past few days. Jason has been the loveliest tiler and great to have a chat to but not too much…..I’ve been keeping the kids away from the kitchen and hallway so he could do his work. And I’d keep popping my head in to ohh and ahh. It has really started to lighten up the room.

I’m actually so glad I didn’t go with the dark floorboards because this room was always so dark with all of that dark brown 70’s kitchen and the brown walls. Now with these light tiles on the floor and the brown kitchen out…..it’s so light and bright. And all night I’ve been stopping to admire the floors.

These are a porcelain tile from Amber Tiles. I went in there looking for Travertine tiles but was scared off by the staining (I have heard a few stories even after they have been sealed) so I settled on the porcelain and they are just gorgeous. Yes there is the chip factor (think something dropping on them not the potato variety) but I’m really happy. Retro daddy has been advised to seal up the grout which is a buff colour to match the tiles but so far so good.

Retro daddy is painting as I type out this blog post and he will spend Sunday painting and the coming week will see the appliances arrive (I ordered through Appliances Online who seemed to have the best prices AND you can just pay on delivery which is great for cashflow) and the kitchen cabinets arrive Friday (woohoo!). I should mention that I’m not allowed to assist in painting and haven’t been allowed to since the ‘butt swiping’ incident of 2006. We had just moved into our first house and I managed to take some paint with me and my big pregnant butt while I was trying to help out retro daddy.

Unfortunately there is a slight drama with the oven which is somewhere on a ship out at sea and isn’t due to arrive into port until mid October. This is not good news as all the trades are due to be finished by the 18th so they’ve made it a priority when it comes in but I really hope it arrives before the 18th because that really is the star of the show in this kitchen. A big black ESSE cooker that I decided to order in Australia so I didn’t have to have it shipped over from England….ahem……It will all be worth it, I know it will and the 3 year warranty is a big plus.

Watch this space…………..

having your lunch cooked in the dishwasher

This post is brought to you by Home Hygiene Standards

Let’s play a little word game. When I say dishwasher, you say……………………….. I’m guessing you’d say clean dishes, clean kitchen counters, quick, easy, hygienic, unpacking, packing and that sort of thing. I doubt you would say delicious chicken or poached pears or a 3 course lunch. But that is what I experienced earlier this week when I went to have a delicious 3 course lunch cooked for me by Ed Halmagyi aka Fast Ed. Who I’ve decided is just about the nicest celebrity chef out there… a genuinely nice guy.

Now I don’t have a dishwasher, not by choice but just because the house had no dishwasher and I knew it was going to be renovated………18 months of washing dishes for a family of 7 and I’m counting down until I get a dishwasher. Now for me a dishwasher is a great way to have clean dishes, save time in the kitchen, have an empty sink and kitchen counter and also cleaner dishes. A little fact is that less than 50% of all aussie households own a dishwasher. The way people have carried on when they hear I don’t have a dishwasher I would have thought it was more.

But I didn’t realise just how much more hygienic having a dishwasher in your kitchen is. That’s because a dishwasher cleans your dishes at a temperature of about 65 degrees and the hot tap water is about 38 degrees. Plus you could be spreading germs with your dishcloths and tea towels if you’re not using a dishwasher. Are you wiping hands or counters with the same tea towel that is drying your dishes. How often are you changing your dishcloths.

We met Marjorie who is the founder and owner of Australian Food Hygiene Services but let’s just call her the home hygiene guru. Her job is to train people in hygiene and she’s seen it all. I’m not sure I’d be prepared to have her in my kitchen or see my practices but she gave us a quiz…………………….and I got one question wrong. Marjorie knows her stuff. Apparently there are 7 million cases of food poisoning in Australia each year and roughly 20% of those are reported to come from the home. But that figure could be higher considering it can sometimes take up 3 days for food poisoning to strike.

And so we talked how to clean chopping boards, how to defrost your chicken, how to keep food in the fridge….and here is an interesting fact. Once you open a can of beetroot and store it in the fridge (obviously in another container not the can) it will last 7 days…..can of corn……….24 hours. How many times have I had some corn in there for a few days to chuck in a stir fry or salad. That’s the end of that one. And how many times would you keep beetroot in the fridge longer than a week.

The real attraction of the day was Ed, he was cooking us a delicious lunch…………………with quite a few of the components cooked in the dishwasher. Yep the dishwasher. Have you heard of sous vide where they seal the food in a vacuum sealed bag and then cook it in a water bath. Well the dishwasher can give you the right temperature for cooking your food but don’t try this at home. It took a lot of practice for Ed to get it just right.

We had a few starters – I loved the scallops – cooked in the dishwasher. And the chicken was so delicious, moist and perfectly cooked. Yep in the dishwasher.

For dessert a delicious dish of poached pears in zinfandel with a bitter chocolate gateau and chocolate cherry ice cream. So delicious and Ed brought out a special dessert wine and personally poured it for each of the ladies there.

A big thank you to everyone involved especially Marjorie for letting us know how we should be doing things, Ed and his helpers for the delicious food and my gorgeous readers who came along and enjoyed lunch with me.

What a group of gorgeous ladies, it was like lunch with old friends and we had such a great time I’ve decided I need to do another lunch with my readers. Ed was only too happy to give Max a little cuddle and Max was only too happy to try to eat Ed’s buttons.

and why don’t you try the test yourself, pop over to www.homehygiene.com.au and see if you get full marks! I won’t tell you which one I got wrong but let me know how you go………………..and especially if you get full marks! We want to know about it. And while you are there you can check out some of the great promotions on offer at the moment when you buy a dishwasher

travelling with kids to Noosa

Well Noosa seems like a distant memory but I know a few of you wanted a full debrief of our trip! We discovered Noosa this time last year and fell in love……..hard. If you have kids then this is family friendly and if you like to do things stylishly, love to shop and a good restaurant then you’ll be right at home. I think that’s the appeal for me – gorgeous beach, great shopping, delicious restaurants and cafes and just a lovely atmosphere.

But let’s add kids to the mix? Yes! Still works and still a great place to stay.

WHERE TO STAY

We like to be right near the beach so stay in a private apartment at the Sebel. It saves you on the cost but I actually discovered it because the hotel was fully booked last year. You have a kids pool and a regular pool, 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, double sofa bed and there are a mix of families and couples. But sadly we’ve outgrown it. It was fine when elodie and emerson were smaller but we need a 3 bedroom next time. If you stay as a guest of the Sebel you will get daily room servicing which would have been nice and you don’t need to bring your own beach towels. If you’d like to save a bit of money then go the private rental through one of the holiday accommodation agencies in noosa. We always get a lovely bottle of wine and welcome pack and enjoy staying there.

There are a few real estate agents who do private rentals and you can look on stayz for apartments and houses. We’ll be looking for a small house that is walking distance to Hastings Street next time just so the kids have a bit of space to run around but so we can still be close enough to where we like to be.

WHERE TO EAT

in your apartment!!!! Taking the whole gang out is a test of patience and budget. We had most of our meals in the apartment and retro daddy would duck out for a bottle of wine and a gourmet pizza for the adults. Coles is at noosa junction which was about 2 bus stops away and Woolies is at Noosa Civic which I found accidentally coming back from a shopping expedition to Noosaville.

For a special meal out we love Sails. We’ve had tables right near the beach (this was the view on the night we went)

amazing service and friendly service (you know when you go somewhere fancy but feel uncomfortable, not at Sails), little entertainment bags for the kids, fabulous wines and cocktails and just a lovely place to be. Lots of families and couples and we’ll go back every year. Now the website says don’t ask for a table near the beach but we have been lucky on our 2 visits so book before you arrive and we go early at 5pm.

We also enjoyed 2 meals at the surf club which has the best views, great gluten free options (their nachos are delicious) and loads of families. We went on a windy night and the carpet was a bit stinky so go at lunch time and sit outside for the amazing views. We had a great lunch on our last day soaking up the sun and views.

Zachary’s do great pizzas and it’s so easy for one of you to duck out and pick up some pizza. If you send your hubby let them discover that it’s a bar so they can order a drink and have a quick one while your pizza is cooking. That’s probably why retro daddy didn’t mind ducking out a few times. their gluten free bases are delicious and we’ve done hawaiian, fruits de mer and chicken tandoori and give them all the thumbs up.

For quick lunches we loved the bakery opposite the Sebel (they have a gluten free bread and some gluten free delicious muffins) and Kabana’s (great fish and chips and some gluten free options too) and the food court next to the Sheraton but sushi set us back almost $40 to feed the whole crew so eating in was always a better option.

Ice cream options are everywhere and for after dinner retro daddy would go and grab a take home pack from royal copenhagen which is just opposite the sebel. Nitrogenie for a bit of wow factor with your ice cream but just like my readers told me, best flavours and taste are up at Massimo’s. Their coconut flavour is so good and I couldn’t say no each day. Walk around the corner and sit on the beach or steps with your ice cream.

WHAT TO DO

If your kids are like our kids then it will be pool time! And a bit of beach time but let’s be clear that our guys are still a bit too young to all enjoy the beach together. Finn doesn’t like sand, elodie is not a fan either, emerson gets sand everywhere and has no fear and tillie and keira love the beach. So we didn’t make it in the water but enjoyed some walks and ice cream time each day and then took a few down separately. We’ll get there……….one day.

If the weather is bad then you’ve got the cinemas at Noosa Junction (Finn kept praying for a rainy day so he could see Turbo).

My guys also love to get a beanie toy from the newsagent, look at the clothes and toys in Go Bananas on Hastings Street or Think Kids (Noosa Junction – great for craft supplies too) and then spend more time in the pool. Our days tended to start between 6 and 7, be in the pool about 9, early lunch about 11, take a walk to the beach, look at the shops, get out and about till 3, back in the pool, dinner, bath, tv, bed. Start it all over again the next day.

GETTING THERE

OK so last year we drove and it was a bit of a nightmare with a 3 month old baby and a few tantrums from the twins. This time I found flights with jetstar and decided we’d fly. Adding in transfers at each end because I didn’t think we could get on a mini bus with other people and the 5 little ones all added to the cost of the holiday. Retro daddy the accountant is convinced we will drive again but I think driving will require a stop over each way just to break it up for the kids. I must admit that I did miss having the van with us for day trips, trips up to the supermarket and I really wanted to head to the farmers market and church on sunday but didn’t have the car with me.

So we will see who will win next year. Flying with everyone was easier than I expected but elodie had some serious ear problems landing which was the worst of it really. And why people feel the need to comment to me on my crying child escapes me. Thankfully each trip we had lovely ladies sitting in front who were very kind and sympathetic.

In Sydney we use Town Cars who came out with a Mercedes van each time and 4 carseats and in Noosa we used a local company but turns out they all share the work. The transfer door to door with 4 carseats was about $145 but they were great and let us sit in the car while retro daddy went in to get the key and they offered to take us past a supermarket to get a few things. If you have older kids or less kids then taxi’s are easy but for us having the transfers all booked made it easy. But yes added to the cost. But it can be done. I know the first holiday with kids can all seem too hard but use the internet, have everything planned out, a great central location near everything and you will be fine. Trust me.

TRAVELLING WITH A CHILD WITH SPECIAL NEEDS

I think I need to mention this. This is our first year taking elodie away where her issues are more pronounced. We probably won’t stay in an apartment again until her tantrums and screaming for things are under control. I found sometimes just telling people was the easiest option like at airport check in, when we were getting into the minivans and she was screaming because it was a new seat and car, on the plane or if we were in a shop trying to do something. Now that we’re home again she is so settled into routine and really happy but she absolutely loved the pool each day and that was when she was happy. Factor in nap times and make sure the little ones get a nap each day because we found they were happier when they had a nap.

We had ipads, tablets, lollies, lemonade, chips, colouring and everything to keep her entertained on the plane but hadn’t really factored in the ear factor as she wouldn’t take any medicine before we left. The very lovely Mrs Woog has told me about some depressurising ear plugs and giving the medicine at home so I think we’ll try that if we’re ever brave enough to fly with our little miss again.

And I would say bring along the things that make them really happy. She loves sorbet and ice cream so we made sure that each day we had a big tub of sorbet in the freezer and when the tantrums were just getting too much we just had a little bowl of sorbet. This isn’t something we would do at home but it just worked while we were away. We also got a few little soft toys while we were away and bought her a little scooter to get around and she was happy. It was hard work yes but she just adored the pool and lots of things about the holiday which outweighed the hard work. Kind of.

VERDICT

We did it, that is our 3rd big holiday away where we’ve taken the whole gang and we’ll probably only do one big holiday each year because it is so much work and expense. The kids had a ball and despite the hard work we all came home relaxed and happy.

day 2 and 3 of our 2nd kitchen renovation

OK well day 2 started with the tiler arriving and realising that he didn’t have the correct product to do our floors. Totally my fault because I had told them we thought it was a cement floor but didn’t realise it would be floorboards under there. So he went off and did another job and retro daddy had the joy of ripping out the existing flooring and prepping the room for painting. And anytime he wanted to complain about the job I did remind him that he wanted to paint himself to save money. And it is a big saving to do the painting yourself.

The electrician came out and we’ve got 3 double power points going where my bench space is, one in a pantry for my microwave and some will go in the island for the dishwasher and also because I love popping my thermomix and kitchen on the island to cook.

On day 3 the tiler came back out and laid down a special product that kind of looks like cement and makes a nice surface to lay the tiles down. It was stinky but you’ve got to love closing the door to the kitchen and staying in another part of the house.

So let the tiling begin…………………………………
