Bargain saturday

Well I decided to read up on sales this weekend and found two! One was a local church which had a massive garage sale and I got all of this for $8….patterns were 5c each (yes 5c) but the lady told me oh there was a girl before you who bought 50….lesson to self to get there early!!!!

We went crazy over the kids books especially this one which is my favourite and actually Japanese….figures!

I then popped over to a $1 warehouse sale by a thrift store…got these goodies for $5 and pretty happy as Keira loves her little baby doll

Finally I spent the afternoon giving retro mummy store a proper home…wools packed away and space made….I’m very happy they are neat and organised and I now need to photograph 7 new books, stationary, gift bags, 30 patterns and some buttons and more trims and thats my saturday night folks.

crafty sunday

A bit of time to myself this Sunday and I whipped up these cute coasters from the latest Cotton & Paint magazine and am loving them…they are backed with denim and are just gorgeous….I might make some more since they were so quick but I now notice my dodgy corners and better get my pin to them and pull them out!!!

I also made this bag and just need to top sew and tidy it up….its the library tote from Crafters Companion….I enjoyed this book so much that I cleaned up my craft room twice this weekend!!! amazing

oh and check out my stitching…I found an embroidery hoop yesterday and have been doing some small projects and I enjoyed it so much I stayed in my pj’s this morning with my coffee longer than normal stitching away…I just need to wash off the washable pen….you can do it without the pen but I find you get a neater look using the pen….if anyone has another method please let me know…

here’s my next one

flashback friday

I love seeing pictures of other bloggers when they were little…so come on share……and since today is the start of a whole new era of blogging for me with a scanner….here I am in all my chubbiness and was probably almost 2 in this photo proving my lifelong love affair with food!!! I wish my mum had saved the dress as its just adorable….

what I’m loving this week

there are so many things I’m loving this week..here’s a few

First up it was these…mmmmm love them and their retro goodness

then the op shop swap we did with these talented ladies…thanks ali…love it all….so much goodness and yummy things in here I don’t know where to start.

I also discovered this magazine from jade…. retro mummy has ordered several copies for the store….so be patient….

and my sister Phoebe (she doesn’t have a blog …yet!) well she has a new west highland pup called mia…very cute…so when I saw this fabric at Spotlight (yes Spotlight) I thought a very cute dog pillow could be made for my non sewing sister and her pup

and lastly don’t miss out on real living to see the gorgeous cushion by tutti fruiti …she’s a designer you know! and miss jennie aka posie patchwork who is in shop 4 kids….what clever friends I have! now if only my beautiful face was in the magazines

Sunday at the beach

Well hubby didn’t want keira and I to have our fun sunday at the pool and yum cha so we headed to manly instead and had some fun…..keira insists we stop at every swing along the way which makes trips longer and involve less power walking but to see her happy little face and hear her voice makes it worthwhile.

so we played

we had a swing

we looked at the view

and we finished with the latest burda magazine and a coffee….sunday without hubby was quite a nice day but don’t tell him that!

Retro mummy does the market

Wow what a day ,I’m pooped, haven’t eaten lunch and am counting down till I hear the thai takeaway man at my doorstep but I’m thrilled as the market was a great success. I got a call from this lovely telling me my fabrics were selling…rough calcs put my sales at $250 and for a first market and first week in business this was a great boost and I’m thrilled…

Mr Retro took little miss to the pub for bangers and mash and a play in the park and even said he could don my cath kidston apron and sell for me….I think we’ll leave it at babysitting duties but he’s all for it!

I’m resting up tonight and taking keira swimming and to vegetarian yum cha in the city for some mummy daughter time while daddy works in the office….on a sunday….perhaps I’ll sneak into kinokuniya and tapestry craft too!

Why I love Thursday

I love thursdays!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Eventhough I miss Keira, its her daycare day and I go to sewing class and its just got better as they’ve extended my sewing class another 2 hours….so I can sew baby free and learn the right way (not the fastest way) from 10-2.30! wahoo….

today I made this and just have to finish the bloomers next week……it fits keira now eventhough its a size 2 but how cute is the pattern…..and I thought I’d had cute overload from retro mummy shop!!

I also love this months ottobre which has this very cute jumpsuit and hat…I’m thinking this would be perfect for keira in pink…those little ears are irrestible.

ps I also love thursday because RETROMUMMY SHOP IS NOW OPEN….OFFICIALLY! I’ve sorted out the paypal issue and you can seamlessly order and pay for your goodies. Thank you to everyone who has visited…new and old friends …..and be sure to show off your goodies on your blog…the more visitors the better! Oh and the retro’s are off this weekend to get a printer and scanner….bye bye bad photos…

The Shops

Well here are the shops……a note to myself and my bad memory and for anyone who plans to visit japan…first up is Tokyo:

Tokyu Hands
This is where you will find kitchen knick knacks, Print Gocco and supplies, stationary, souvenirs, bags…..so many things…. spread over 7 levels. At the rear of Takashimaya in Shinjuku. Take the New South exit at Shinjuku Station and walk through 2F (ground floor) of Takashimaya to the back of the store

Kinokuniya

Home of all books and magazines, this is a massive store! Go to 2F for craft books at the rear and 3F for magazines in the back rear corner! Fabulous collection and shame my Australian discount card didn’t work there! Also in Shinjuku and the quickest way is walk behind Tokyu Hands and its there straight ahead of you..this is how they wrap your bags in the rain…practical and cute

Okadaya
whoops not to be confused with department store of similar name odakyu! This was my favourite store in Tokyo and my credit card will attest to that!!! On one side you have 7 levels of various crafts from beading, embroidery, knitting, sewing and a whole level of craft books and next door is 5 or 6 levels of fabric but the ground level has the cottons and linens that I was after. This store is fabulous and I spent many an hour in here and it wasn’t enough. Thank you Pinku for your detailed directions……take the east exit at Shinjuku and look up and you will see the sign and follow it, its just to the left of the Alta Building.

Marunen
This store is in Shibuya and has lots of fabrics and buttons crammed into a few levels….I found some great fabrics on the basement level and they had fabulous leftover fabric FQ’s for $2 each. Take the Hachiko exit with the big intersection and lights, with starbucks on your right its on a corner to your left with lots of fabrics outside and a green awning…note the store name is in Japanese so just look for the fabrics outside

Loft
This store is also in Shibuya and is fabulous for sticky tapes (or deco tapes as I’m now told they are called in Japan), stamps, stickers, stationary and cute bags….I love this store and remembered it well from my last trip…..I spent over $160 on tapes, stickers and writing paper so its gooooooood. Its on the west side of Shibuya station just behind the Seibu department store with a big yellow sign so you can’t miss it

La Droegurie
This is a gorgeous store and very cute indeed…..lots of buttons and beads I’ve never seen anywhere else but be warned its expensive! I spent about $51 on a handful of beads but they were so cute including little undies and t-shirt beads. Its in Harajuku just as you get to the Ometasando Hills building on your left there is a small laneway before it with an organic store on the right, take the lane way and its on your left.

Marimekko
I actually preferred the store in Kyoto which was smaller but had a large table of remnants and a basket full of fabric pieces costing $2-$10 and when a metre ranges from $44 to $70 this is a great find…..the fabrics are just gorgeous and I had my eyes on a few fabrics but with hubby behind me and a large shopping bill I wasn’t allowed to buy anymore than remnants. Its in Harajuku just to the left of the big Ralph Lauren building on the left just as you’ve walked past the big Gap store on the corner

last but not least Tomato
what a store! 7 levels of fabrics and a gorgeous store….I was warned to take cash and $700 was not enough for all the fabrics we bought! this is the home of fabrics in Nippori textile town. Nippori is on the Yamanote line and was about 20 minutes from our hotel in Shinagawa…….take the East exit, turn right and follow signs to textile town….a street of fabric stores but Tomato had the most comprehensive range. Just start on the ground level and keep going up and up and up…the top level has a large range of Michael Miller and quilt fabrics…fabulous store and one of the highlights of the trip. They have a few other stores opposite with tapes etc but we didn’t make it there…next trip I’ll go on two mornings as we ran out of cash and hands

If you make it to Kyoto there is a wonderful store called Nomura Tailor on the main shopping street. I got wonderful little kits to make baby toys and rattles, buttons, trims, a great range of fabrics and cheaper prices than Tokyo….this was a great store and if you’re in Kyoto do it! I think the street is called shoji rori but its the main shopping street and on your left past Daimuru.

I think thats it…back to the unpacking…..

my baby is one today!!!!!!!!!

oh my baby turns 1 today!I can’t believe that 1 year ago today my big baby was born…..friday afternoon at 5.56pm weighing 3.9kgs/8pd10oz and a head full of black hair! she was so cute and I remember the joy of seeing her for the first time and waking up that night…very out of it from all the drugs……..but so excited every time they’d wheel her in for a feed!

she’s still the love of my life and the most precious thing I have in this world….her smiles, laughs and hugs make each day worthwhile and I truly have the best job in the world being her mummy and teacher

while we’re still working on giving her a few brothers and sisters we ‘re having so much fun enjoying her and I didn’t realise how excited I would be with her milestone……

so I better get back to all the party preparations for tmrw! Cakes are done just the birthday cake and brownies tonight!!!!

never leave your child unattended

Yes never turn your back on a little one eating….or you get this……..what a mess…straight into the bath after this! I had a repeat performance tonight as well as missy won’t let you feed her…she has to feed herself!

thank you for all my lovely comments on wardrobe refashion…its a bit of a scary thought but if I make so many clothes for keira its a good challenge for myself!

well less than 10 inches to go on ISE4 and have set sunday night as my target and hope to to get it finished because some little person in our house needs some winter woollies and I’ve been so focused on this scarf!!!!

this afternoon I was busy…when I worked in corporate land I was lazy on a friday afternoon but at home I managed to make 2 pairs of little pants for keira and start to organise my sewing room….so the fabric looks better but the rest of the room is shambles……

have a good weekend….

Melbourne with a sick baby

well not much going here just looking after a sick bub…who won’t eat! my gorgeous usually big eater won’t touch a thing….she even rejected a pink iced donut and her favourite quiche which I painstakingly baked!!

she has hand foot and mouth and covered in little spots, won’t eat and very grumpy….our weekend in melbourne had to change a bit…sunday breakfast was much later and family lunch was replaced by a trip to the local shopping centre so that miss keira wasn’t in contact with her little nieces and nephews….mind you an afternoon at the shops wasn’t all bad!

so in Melbourne we got to catch up with my sister and her lovely man Toby!

ate the yummiest breakie I’ve ever had at Richmond Hill Cafe and Larder

and keira enjoyed her boiled egg with vegemite soldiers….cute! and yes she is that messy eating!

and can you spot tutti frutti’s goods in there….unfortunately the shop didn’t open till 12 but I managed these shots!

Since keira isn’t allowed to go to swimming, playgroup, mothers group, gym creche or anywhere where she can touch kids its just mommy and keira time this week! today we took a lovely walk and play down at manly beach and tmrw we will go to her favourite park for a swing and play…just the two of us! it is actually nice to not have a busy schedule and I can’t go to the gym so I’m enjoying the week’s break!

still working on ISE4 tonight! I’m past the halfway mark….wahoo….why do I do lace for this swap! why oh why….

Frenchy…..and yes I knit

well today was a glorious today! I started and finished frenchy and am so in love with it! it took a bit more time as its the first time I’ve done this pattern but I just adore it…don’t you! its for my little sis who without any babysitting experience will be minding keira and her 3 cousins on saturday night…..I think this is a lovely reward!

I’m also proving that I knit…just a few things I’m working on which are my scarf, mason dixon bib and jo sharp fitted cardy from KNIT 3…..notice I’m trying to get all arty with my photos….perhaps its because I actually had the time today to take some nice photos outdoors

well hubby has just left for melbourne….a boring old meeting tmrw…so its just me and keira hanging out till bed time…then I’m knitting!!!!

Isn’t she lovely…………

no words needed here…………………..

new Amy Butler and my own to do list

Wow I just got a teaser email from Amy Butler (well not her personally but her company) and there are 2 new patterns ….should be here in 2 weeks
and a new fabric range….its called nigella….my first thought Nigella domestic goddess Nigella but no its Nigella her favourite flower! looks great but wait for it….end of june release….better be patient and will have to stock up after Japan

well, we are visiting melbourne next week and its a great time to give some new/expectant mums their presents….but wait a sec I haven’t made them yet! So while hubby, who is totally stressed with work as he’s up for Director (next stop Partner….I’ve always seen myself as a partner’s wife) and needs to impress till decisions have been made ….so he was writing his To Do list in the office at 7pm on a friday night when most people would be down at the pub…..anyway I said great idea thats what I need….he laughed…I was serious

so here it is…1 week to do all of this.

– purse project – I’m half way done
– another pincushion for EB swap
– Amy Butler bag for sister as present for babysitting keira next saturday and 1 for hubby’s sister
– jo sharp little cardy to wear in the freezing cold melbourne winter weather
– 3 Debbie Bliss baby beanies for Eva Millie born this week and 2 bubs on the way
– 3 Amy Butler nappy bags for Eva’s mummy and 2 mummy’s to be, Monique and Shaye
– 1 sleeping bag for thomas who turns 1 next week
– something for another dear friend Bec from school is also due in 2 weeks so better add her to the list and whip a few goodies up!

and some more keira shots….I’ve started her baking early and I think she needs her own little trendy apron!

Some baking…and bunny ears!

Well we still have rain…..so we did some more baking..apple muesli muffins for keira who helped me out by cleaning the bowls…mind you it then ended up on the floor and all over her clothes and hair…but she is loving spoons and bowls at the moment

I also managed to make this today…..but I’m calling it bunny ears…..remember at school when you were told to read instructions thoroughly BEFORE you start anything! I am sure it was drummed into my head especially at exam time….but today I failed to read that Ottobre patterns DO NOT INCLUDE seam allowances! so instead of a nice wide shoulder we have what looks like bunny ears!!!! But this is a cute little sleeping bag with embroidered cupcakes on it! very cute and warm for miss keira!

In real life, I’m off to look at a childcare centre tmrw for my precious keira! I’m dreading it but have a 4 week teaching prac to complete this year and childcare in sydney is impossible and to secure a place we need to start her one day a week now….on the upside I did find a sewing course that I could do while she is in daycare and I she loves other kids so am sure she will have fun…. I think it will be harder for mummy! EDITED TO ADD MISS K LOVED IT SO MUCH IT ISN”T FUNNY! SHE WAS TAKEN OFF ME AND DIDN’T EVEN NOTICE AS THERE WERE SO MANY GREAT TOYS, LADIES WHO JUST WENT CRAZY OVER HER AND WANTED TO KEEP HER AND IT WAS ALL SO BRAND NEW…SHE WILL LOVE IT AND I’M SO HAPPY….THURSDAY’S TO MYSELF HERE I COME!!

and this is why I don’t want to leave her…..because she is soooo cute!!!!
