progress has been slow

two teething babies has definitely slowed progress on the quilt…..I also have to break up their fights every now and then….

but I’m getting there with only 3 squares left to stitch…its been very enjoyable except when Keira finds a ball of perle cotton and decides to walk it around the house like a dog on a leash leaving mummy to rewind it and put it in another keira proof spot!

and while I was writing this post little miss decided to do this……perhaps another reason why progress has been slow! I was so busy laughing I forgot to remind her not to pull all the toilet paper off the roll!

gone quilting

while the babies have been sleeping peacefully like this……

I’ve been quilting….2 nights (I fell into bed at 12.30 this morning) and 1 morning have produced this quilt top which is the Candy Shop quilt from this book….I’ve used Midwest Modern and Farmers Market fabric in lovely shades of pink, red, green and yellow and white quilters muslin which will be stitched with cute flowers, cherries, dragonflies and butterflies….

I’m taking a break from it this afternoon to catch up on the housework which has been somewhat neglected over the past few days and to give me some time to find the perfect backing and binding fabric since this is my first ‘big’ quilting project….

more progress to come during the week.

Dolls quilt in a day

My little miss loves nothing more than cuddling up on the couch with her pink pillow and her blankie, but lately all her blankies have been used for the babies to play on so I took a packet of charm squares, some $2 homespun from spotlight (I bought 5m at that price) and whipped this up…..

the best thing about making a quilt for a 2 year old is that they don’t care if mummy’s lines aren’t straight….there was lots of oh its so pretty and thank you mummy so I think a few more might be on the cards for her dolls and the twins!

Hope you had a good new years eve….we had a glass of veuve clicquot and some berry tiramisu I’d made (since all the best diets start tomorrow) and were asleep before midnight….uh oh

year of the fat lady

Wow what a year……when I reflect back on 2008 all I can think about is being huge….we were only in melbourne for a week or two before I got doubly pregnant….I went through 4 pairs of maternity jeans (thank you Ripe in Brighton for the best ever maternity jeans), gained 18 kilos (only 2 more to lose), ate TUMS religiously and struggled to do anything but oh it was so worth it!!!! I just adore all three of my babies and can’t wait to have more….

and so while reflecting on the year that was…..I hope in 2009 I will get into shape, make more and spend less, do more for others, keep the washing under control, unpack those last boxes, get all my paperwork in order, try to resist purchasing every fabric range, pattern or yarn that I see, save for a new sewing machine and just get out of the house more!

Simple Summer Top

While Keira was at her kindy for the day, retro daddy was in the office (instead of being on holidays) and in between loads of laundry, sterilising bottles, tending to babies and talking on the phone to my nana…I moved the sewing machine to the dining room

got out a new pattern and fabric I picked up yesterday at Spotlight (just because it was so nice to shop on my own and not because I needed to buy a new pattern and fabric)

and made this top….now be warned that there is a lot of gathering so thread up a few bobbins before you start

I loved this pattern except when it told me to slipstitch the lining all around the yoke..honestly who has time for that…I just top stitched under the yoke catching all layers as I went.

the top is perfect for my post twin baby belly and the neckline is so sweet….it was just so lovely to be sewing again that I’m going to lock in some babysitting with retro daddy on weekends so I can sew some more!

our Christmas

phew, all our festivities are over for another year….they began with church on Christmas eve which was a hot and crowded affair with a sweet nativity play put on by the parish school complete with a real baby jesus, tea towelled shepherds and tinsel angels…Christmas morning Keira had to be woken up to open up presents

lunch was a very Australian affair with prawns, lobster, ham and cold turkey

and the next day we did it all over again with more family….this year the vegetarian in me should have planned the menu because little did I know the oven door seal was worn and the long turkey cooking time led to burnt kitchen cupboards and doors on either side…whats a girl to do but pan fry her almost cooked turkey roast

and turn Nigella’s festive couscous into festive turkey couscous…..it was lovely even if it was like a scene from a bad Christmas movie but ever the optimist it does mean a new oven is coming my way….

after lunch there was time to test the water before taking a dip in the pool

open more presents in our second dress for the day

watch the twins wrestle

then nap

and now mummy can get the house back into order, put her feet up and enjoy a week of retro daddy at home…..

I’m all out of Crafty Christmas Ideas

Ok so I didn’t make it to 25 crafty christmas ideas and keira’s face says it all……she has one busy mumma running around with a lot to do before Santa arrives and that includes houseguests to look after, two days of festivities at our house and lots of extra mouths to feed…and a mental note not to offer to host Christmas festivities for the entire family next year.

hope you’re taking it a bit easier than I am…….in case I don’t get online (what am I saying, of course I won’t be online for the next 48 hours) have a very Merry Christmas and enjoy this special time of year. I hope Santa brings you everything you wish for (last Christmas I wished for one baby and a safe pregnancy and look what happened)…..you are all such lovely readers and put up with my waffle and ramblings and its always a pleasure to come and read your messages…..

Crafty Christmas Idea 25….put your feet up

yes I’m all done, all out of Crafty Christmas Ideas now that I need to get cracking with the cooking and cleaning! 8 guests on christmas day and 18 on boxing day makes for a busy mummy

so put your feet up and have a wonderful Christmas….I won’t be putting my feet up by the way especially as I now have to wrap all of the presents!

Crafty Christmas Idea 24…..pretty kitchen holders

OK we’re getting really close now…..not much time to be crafting when you have food to prepare and a house to clean for visitors and while I was in the kitchen I had a glance over at my super cute kitchen pot holder I was given by Belinda this year! 2 squares of fabric, some batting and a little loop to hang….too easy

perfect for a present filler…thanks Belinda!

Crafty Christmas Idea 23…..finish off a WIP

I’m sure if you delved into your pile of WIP’s you’d find something perfect to be gifted away……last night I remembered this blanket and thought it would be the perfect gift for a new mummy of twins who will be in hospital over Christmas…so a couple more rounds of crochet and it was done

then wrapped with some other goodies and will be given away this afternoon! and thats one less item in the WIP pile and one less present to start before Christmas!

Crafty Christmas Idea 22…pretty sewing box

I don’t know about your family but in mine a few members are crafty and this year my sister has revealed she would like to learn to sew little dresses for her little miss. I’ve made up a sweet box (I almost needed a degree in architecture to put this box together from kikki.k) full of everything she needs to get started……………

its a nice way to share some crafty love with someone you know….

Crafty Christmas Idea 21….pretty fairy tutu

Oh dear this tutu has been a long time coming…I’ve made 2 or 3 no-sew tutus for my little fairy keira but felt I was cheating her out of a proper one. Armed with Simplicity pattern 7351 (sorry its an older pattern), lycra and tulle I bravely ventured into the world of sewing with lycra…and here is my first ever leotard….

and a few hours later here is the tutu complete with apple juice down the front followed by some wee wee too….got to love toilet training time!

anyway, apple juice and other things aside I’m so proud of this little outfit particularly as its been a long time between sewing projects in this house. I think you have enough time before Christmas to whip up one or two for the fairies in your life.

Crafty Christmas Idea 20…..jars of jammy goodness

There are some fabulous fruits at the moment just screaming out to be preserved…..this morning I decided to make a little bit of jam and a few hours in the kitchen produced 3 jars of Plum & Apricot jam.

All you need to make jam is equal quantities of fruit and sugar (too easy), water, a packet of jamsetta (that clever miss marzie told me I need the jamsetta after my first ever marmalade decided not to set properly), sterilised jars and a big saucepan….

Instructions are on the back of the jamsetta and make sure you do test that it sets or you’ll need to rename it coulis!!!! And also make sure you slop a little of the jam around the jar to make it look like you made it….oops but not to worry as I think some pretty fabric around the top of the lids will make them even sweeter!

Crafty Christmas Idea 19…the yummiest balls around

Rum balls that is…..Christmas is the only time of year I make rum balls and I’ve cut a bit of rum from my recipe this year as I can’t stand alcohol at the moment….I think I must still be recovering from the twin pregnancy!

I think they are an Australian classic and this is an AWW recipe…
400g madeira cake crumbled
1/4 cup sifted cocoa
2Tbsp rum
1/4 cup apricot conserve, warmed (if you want full on rum balls omit this and add more rum which is how I traditionally make them)
1-2 Tbsp water
chocolate sprinkles

mix cocoa and cake crumbs together and add your conserve and rum and stir. Add water or more rum if needed to make them moist then roll into balls and in chocolate sprinkes. Keep them in the fridge and enjoy later. I’m not sure how long mine will last in the fridge now that retro daddy is on holidays.

Getting to know you…………

getting to know everything about you

and I’m not so sure that Finn is enjoying everything about Tillie!

and thank you Cass for the beautiful quilt (one of two you generously made for the babies) that they play on….and throw up on (but they are getting a good workout in the washing machine)
