Corrie’s One Cup Cookies

Just like my brownies….I’ve been perfecting this recipe over time and think I’ve got it just right.

Corrie’s One Cup Cookies
1 cup plain flour
1 cup sugar (caster or brown)
1 cup oats (rolled or quick)
1 cup choc chips/chunks and pecans (I had 3/4 cup chocolate and 1/4 cup chopped pecans)
125g melted butter

Combine all ingredients and roll into small balls, flatten on tray and bake in 190 degree oven for 15-20 minutes (mine take about 18 minutes). Cool on tray for 5 minutes then transfer to cooling rack. These won’t last long as they are so deliciously sweet, buttery and crispy!

Occasionally my mixture is a teensy bit dry so I add 1-2Tbsp water. If you’re watching your waistline swap the butter for low fat margerine, use 3/4 cup sugar and use big fat juicy raisins instead of chocolate and pecans.

And inspired by this lady’s new profile picture I thought it was time I stopped putting a picture of a knitted doll as my profile picture…since I’m obviously not one. Sooooooooo, here I am a la saturday morning…and I can’t say ‘oh please excuse me but I have no makeup on’ as I very rarely wear it but I am noticing the wrinkles creeping up on me without my permission.

oh yeah and I think I’m the last blogger to make it on twitter but I’m there as retromummy now! only one real life friend is but every other crafty person seems to have been on there for ages!!!!!

fridays, french movies and fabric

Phew its Friday…I finished the quilt last night and just need to fray and trim some more edges……ragged edges aren’t going to be everyone’s liking but its cute for a baby!

I’m also super tired as I stayed up way too late into the morning watching the most amazing movie ….now I don’t want to sound all arthouse here but you simply must watch La Vie en Rose with the very beautiful Marion Cotillard (we’re a huge fan of this lovely lady)….wow what a movie! I grew up listening to Piaf…not through choice but when you’re dear mother is a french teacher you are surrounded by french movies and music whether you like it or not.

French movies I love but Piaf wasn’t to a child’s taste….long trips to Queensland were filled with cassette after cassette of Piaf…not really your light and happy travel music suitable for children but anyway…..I knew nothing of her life until I watched this movie…and all I can say is watch it! the story, the amazing acting, the music it was all just amazing and its one of those special movies you must watch. I’m still affected by it today….I watched it on the World Movie channel or you could check out your local video store (gosh I haven’t been in there for years).

and a blogless Lynda asked yesterday where I buy my fabric…I couldn’t write back to you so here you go! I love to buy fabric at fat quarter shop, hancocks of paducah, sew mama sew heather baileys store is also great as she has everything in her ranges (a little bit too dangerous) and if you join their mailing lists they will email you with special offers and discounts. I buy 5-6 yards at a time and usually pay about US$11 shipping for an envelope and you can normally still fit a pattern in there too. Ebay and etsy are great too just make sure you check fabric size and postage before you buy. If you just want a taste of a fabric range buy charm square packs and you can pick them up on ebay for about $15 or Julie’s store and they’re a great way to get some colour and great designs and you can do applique or quilts with them. Now if I’m just after a bit of fabric for binding or something special (like when I needed to match fabrics or get my huge quilting hoop) then I’ll go to a quilting store…this is my nearest and its such a beautiful store. Definitely worth a trip up north Sydney ladies. In Melbourne this was my lovely shop of choice.

And lastly if I need lots of fabric for a quilt backing or to make a large project then I head to Spotlight. If you go there often you can keep an eye on whats coming in and sometimes you get some real beauties so long as you haven’t killed yourself tripping over the boxes and crap everywhere.

pre-school, brown owls and brownies

boy we’ve been busy here this week with keira starting pre-school two days a week…I won’t begin to tell you how hard it is to find 3 year old pre-school or even a place that will take us when we’re not on their huger than huge waiting list. But we did it and keira is loving it….

so much so that on her first day she walked in, left me at the door, pulled up a chair and started playing barbies and talking to everyone…thats my girl. I’ll admit the other kids were just staring at her and she did all the talking….I blame myself of course.

Last night, I taught some super nice girls how to crochet and am hoping they all went home to practice!!! Gosh everyone was so sweet!

I made my world famous brownies and thought I’d share the recipe again…..I know this recipe off by heart since I write it out all the time. I’ve perfected this recipe over the years so get out your pens…you’ll make lots of new friends with my brownies.

Corrie’s Best Ever Brownies
200g dark chocolate
150g butter
2 eggs
1 cup caster sugar
3/4 cup self raising flour

melt butter and chocolate, pour into new bowl and mix in eggs, sugar and flour stirring after each addition. Pour into lined square tin and bake for 25-30 minutes in 190 degree oven. Leave to cool 5 minutes in tin then cut and enjoy. You can add nuts if you like (walnuts or pecans are the best!). This is all thats left from yesterday’s batch…..

Binding is almost done on the quilt, ripples are coming along slowly, new fabrics arrived in the post (Heather’s jellybean fabric makes the best ever quilt binding so I stocked up), my throat and head hurt as the cold weather hits me hard and I think today I’ll try to stay indoors and finish the quilt while my clothes dryer continues to work overtime….

sunday night sewing

phew…its been a week between posts as I’ve been recovering from a morning tea I held for 18 adults and 30 kids that was just crazy!!! Now I’m just itching to start a new quilt but am forcing myself to finish the 3 outstanding projects I have on the go…..so tonight I pulled out the sewing machine and finished the quilting on this little cot quilt.

I was having doubts about the ragged edges but actually its turned out nicely and the edges are quite forgiving. Its a quilt as you go project so as you attach the flowers and centres you are quilting…trying to get lovely curves has been a challenge for little old beginner me but I’m happy with it.

Tomorrow I’ll trim the edges and do the binding………

A quilt with a touch of throw up

Well here is the quilt I’ve been working on for the bushfire victims. I made the light pink blocks (can you tell????) and put it all together (a mild touch of panic set in when I realised I would have to put it together…I’m such a beginner in my quilting group) but I’m happy with how it turned out with the exception of my very wonky top stitching (which I’m blaming on the polar fleece as you do). Anyway, this afternoon I gave it a quick press and hung it over the lounge for some photos

then I realised there was something wet on the quilt……I washed out 3 marks and couldn’t work out how they got there…I kept asking keira what she put on the quilt. A few minutes later I found some of Finn’s throw up under the ironing board…while I had been ironing he had quickly moved himself into the kitchen and under the ironing board…in a panic I picked him up and moved him to safety and continued to iron oblivious to the throw up left behind……eeeeeeeewwww

fingers crossed I’ve got it all out….it was sweet potato and chicken….not the easiest of foods to remove. And here is the smiling culprit….always smiling!

super quick winter blankie

Here is the fastest blankie you will ever make. A large piece of cotton fabric and the same size of polar fleece.

Sewn right sides together leaving a space to turn out.

Trim your corners, turn it out and top stitch all around and you have one super comfy winter blankie that I whipped up for Keira yesterday. Just be sure to use your walking foot with the polar fleece which has a mind of its own.

And before you say how does she get the time for all these projects, then I better let you in on a little secret…..this is how the couch in the back room looks for most of the week. I always clear it a couple of times a week and especially when we have visitors but 2-3 loads of washing a day needs a temporary home and this is where it goes.

and hi to this lovely lady and her adorable baby Scout, so nice to meet you!!!! We were both taking advantage of 60% off at one of my favourite stores. I love a good sale and I sacrificed my morning shower to make it there by 8am. Think of all the money I saved retro daddy….he he he

ripple it….

just a little bit…..

rippling is highly addictive…there should be a health warning attached to the pattern as every spare moment has been spent with this growing blanket.

keira plays the classics

for Christmas my parents bought Keira and the twins an old piano…..the thought of one of their flashy pianos (which includes an ivory baby grand) being lent to us for Keira to bang around on was too frightening for them. It turned out to be a wise move as there has been a lot of banging, singing and even colouring on the keys (thankfully removed)

here she is with her little friends Henry and Freya doing some nursery rhymes….

and today while the babies napped I tried my hand at ripples…..I’m going to do a manageable playmat which means the hexagons will continue to hibernate a little longer.

I searched my ever expanding home library for crochet books to help me and found the best instructions were in a small book called Beginners Guide to Crochet ‘ Ripples for Baby’ by Leisure Arts. I got my copy on the Ravelry Australian Knitters destash page for about $3. If you think ripples might be your thing check out this blog

busy Tuesdays

Tuesdays are always busy as Keira enjoys her day at ‘kindy’ and mummy enjoys a day with the twins! Today they had a little playmate over and Finn continued to explore the world past his playmat

Tillie napped (oh the lips!)

mummy waited for the new fruit and veg delivery to arrive….mmmm a box jam packed full of freshness

and found a teensy bit of time for quilting…..I’m loving this quilt as you go project but didn’t realise how much that one strip of heather bailey stands out…….mmmm we’ll see how it looks after the flowers are quilted.

making a cinderella scarf

miss keira is totally in love with cinderella and princesses……so when she found this yarn at spotlight she kept pulling it down in every colour they had and throwing it under the pram…..we bought some home (I’ll admit its 100% acrylic and I don’t do acrylic but its for my keira)

and we are making it into a cinderella scarf…cast on 16 stitches and knit garter stitch and keep going…..thankfully my little cinderella is patient and I’ll try to finish it soon…..

everyone loves a wedding

yes siree everyone loves a wedding!!!!! We got dressed up…..miss keira thought she was coming too and picked out her favourite princess dress…but she was happy to be left at home with the grandparents and some pizza.

the backdrop was gorgeous

the bride was fashionably late…leaving the groom waiting

and was definitely a beautiful bride with one of her little girls by her side

after the ceremony the happy couple were presented

oh and the little chocolate boxes looked perfect too!

I won’t show you all the photos but it was just a lovely wedding! I could have stayed all night but someone has to get to patternmaking this morning, so home we came to find all 3 asleep…..and perhaps another night out is on the cards for the two of us.

61, 62, 63……………..

63 little white boxes filled with chocolates ready for the wedding on Friday. This is my present to the bride and groom…I had great intentions to make the chocolates but the warm weather was making my test batch all soft once they were out of the fridge. I know that once they are out of my hands I have no control over the elements and I don’t want happy guests opening boxes of chocolate mush. So each box has 2 roses chocolates inside as they are fully wrapped and a little more hardy! I know this was supposed to be my present to them but I can’t help myself and am going to pop down to DJ’s tomorrow to get my favourite Georg Jensen photo frame too…I’m such a wedding tragic and the bride knows it! She dubbed me her wedding planner!

and I’ve been slowly knitting…at a pace of 2 rows a night. I’m making this little cardy in Patons serenity, a gorgeous blend of cotton and bamboo. I know the pattern is a little nana-esque but I’m doing a size smaller and combined with the bright colour should make this cardy just my style.

the blanket is done

Thank you for all your kind birthday wishes! it was a nice day and we finished it with a batch of my yummy cupcakes…iced of course. There were quite a few left over in the fridge but one hungry daddy polished them all off…mental note to make 2 batches next time.

I enjoyed some quiet time after church to finish off this lap blankie and photographed it complete with some white icing on the table from sticky little fingers…

scrap quilt blocks

yesterday was just one of those days, the babies were teething, Keira just wanted to spend the day at the park and mummy had over 6 loads of washing to catch up on and just wanted to have her morning shower!

while everyone had their afternoon nap (this is rare for keira), I made these 2 scrap quilt blocks for my quilting group because it was becoming clear that I just wanted to spend the night having a nice long shower and lie on the couch watching desperate housewives and the oscars……………and thats what I did and it was good!

boxes for bushfire victims

this afternoon I dropped off our donations for the bushfire victims…..thank you to Anita, Claudine and Cass for your donations…I added some more items (especially as I am the queen of stockpiling nappies) and boxed them up complete with tatty sticky tape on the side of a box (ok well I took that off once I realised it was there!)

I added this blankie made by mum and we dropped them off to Sara….and how cool that donations were so generous that Sara was lent a warehouse until delivery to whittlesea this Tuesday!

oh and we also did a mini portrait this afternoon as I needed to submit a photo of the family for a newsletter…..well this is the best I could manage of all 3 keeping still and looking at the camera…

the day was completed with a quick call to emergency about an hour ago to check we didn’t need to bring Keira in…..she fell off the couch onto the hardwood floors resulting in the biggest blue bump you’ve ever seen on her head. I am now monitoring her every movement to check she is ok! phew, now where is that big block of chocolate I need….I think I may have a box of roses somewhere that need opening…..
