Our kitchen renovation – china patterns

Well I’m happy to report that I’m up and at ’em this morning! I hate being sick so am glad to be feeling almost normal this morning. I don’t have the energy to do my usual step class so instead am going to use the time to hunt down a few more essentials for the renovation. And thank you for all the dining suggestions, I’m so glad you warned me against wicker. I didn’t even think about food getting stuck in there! What would I do without you all.

now top of my list for shopping is a new china set for the kitchen. I have my fancy wedding china by Wedgewood which I keep for special occasions. But every year when I’ve wanted to replace the mismatched and chipped dinner plates that live in my cupboard, retro daddy has told me just wait till you have a new kitchen. Well that time is coming.

Now of course being a man he’d rather not spend money. So when I sent him some pics of my favourite china patterns he just told me stick to a cheap white set. No. That’s what we had before. If I’m getting my dream kitchen then I am having some very pretty plates, cups and bowls to go into it and I’m getting rid of all the mismatched stuff I have. We are currently using the same plates and bowls that I used when I first moved out of home on my own…….we are going back a long way in time now.

So here are my favourites. I’m really in love with the first set but let me know your favourites and if you have something you think I’d love then definitely let me know.

  1. I have a villeroy & boch dinner set and I love it. Have had it for perhaps 10 years and have only broken 2 mugs (neither my fault, heh!). I like the switch 3. Peters of Kensington is a good place to buy them.

  2. Switch three, I have cups that match them from my kitchen tea, love it!!! Well done corrie on your dream kitchen!!

  3. two words – emma bridgewater. Get loads and delivery to Oz is reasonable 😉

  4. For what it’s worth, we go a set of Denby when we got married 18 years ago which we use every day and still have most of it. We bought a cheap white set when we arrived here 3 years ago to use until our stuff arrived and most of it has been smashed to pieces. You get what you pay for!
I agree with Twinkle – Emma Bridgewater is gorgeous.

  5. I really love the first set too!! I know it will look gorgeous in your new kitchen. Glad you are feeling better today :)

  6. My favorite is the first one! Love it!

  7. So lovely! Our wedding china ia V&B tipo blue and I adore it. We are going to use it as our everyday china when we finish the reno replacing our fantastic but chipped and missing mikasa white plates and various other bits and pieces we’ve acquired to replace the things that have broken. I am a big fan of all white china so the tipo blue suits me but I do have some lovely cake stands and chargers that are more decorative. Of course, there’s always room for more :-) I look forward to seeing what you get!

  8. And now, thanks to Twinkle I am going to look up Emma Bridgewater. PS Do you know that Bed Bath and Table sell the Pip bedlinen? You posted about the china recently, I think you’ll love the sheeting! Just don’t tell retrodaddy that I told you about it :-)

  9. I like the first one best, although to be honest plain and simple white is my favourite.

Spotted this one on one of the sites you linked to – http://royaldesign.com/AU/Search.aspx?s=swedish+grace Lovely!

  10. the first set is my choice as well :)

    (we have Correll- its wonderful)

  11. I love the first one – it is so classic with all the blue and white. It will look great in your white kitchen.

  12. I’m with Sandra. I have been in love with Denby for absolutely ever but could never quite find the $$$ to get a set. We use our Maxwell William Cashmere for every day and it’s great. Yes it’s plain white but classic in a sense and seems to go with any extra bits and pieces that I buy in a colour. I just looked up Emma Bridgewater (thanks Twinkle) and it look amazing!!!! But if you can . . . go Denby! They have a warehouse sale on in VIC in November but deliver to anywhere in Aus. But you didn’t hear that from me! : )

  13. Oh how beautiful Corrie, my faves are definitely the first two sets. Why don’t you just get two sets ;o) RetroDaddy would love that advice!
I would LOVE a matching dinnerset, but alas ours is a mismatch of various sets and hand-me-down’s over the years. Thanks for giving me some ideas and inspiration here :o) xo

  14. Hi
I’m in love with pergola. I waited a long time – like you for new china. When the time came I bought 2 sets the same so I would always have extra for visitors. Did the same when I got new cutlery – went right over the top and bought two 8 piece settings.
    Cheers

  15. i love the first and the second set! (:

  16. Wicker really isn’t that bad – I have four little children and have had wicker high backed dining chairs for three years and if food does get stuck it usually is very easy to vacuum out once it has dried for a day or two. The worst thing to spill is yoghurt and even that cleaned up fine with hot soapy water.

  17. Love the first set the best. Absolutely beautiful and classic.

  18. I love villeroy & boch! If you can’t decide, go to their home page and help deciding with the lifestyle section or by colour, maybe motif.

From those four I would go for the second.

  19. hi

love my denny- got a good deal from peters of kensington; I’ve only broken 1 plate in 6 years. pattern was then discontinued and I bought loads of extras from denby in the uk for 80% off and that covered the postage. I still love it, goes through the dishwasher, into the oven etc etc and it’s colourful.

good luck, love the first pattern too

  20. I have Villeroy & Boch and am never tired of it.

Love Love Love it and use it all the time, no good in the cupboard.

  21. After many dishes.. I finally ended up getting plain white as my true wish. I wanted something that matched any occasion and any table linen, or quilty decor that I put on the table. I don’t want something that won’t match what other decorations I am putting on the table.

  22. The Pergola would be my first choice, followed by the Switch 3 with the leaves on it. 😀
I agree, new kitchen = new dishes!

  23. I hate to admit it, but like retro daddy I would go with plain white. (In fact, I did!) Whereas you can get tired of a pattern over the years, with white dishes you can do any number of looks with different table linens or even inexpensive salad plates or bowls. But I guess that’s not really much help, is it? :) I’m sure whatever you choose will look great in your lovely new kitchen.

  24. Just wanted to clarify “CHEAP” as in Target cheap = not worth it, Villeroy and Boch white would be a whole other story!

  25. Take a look at this Royal Copenhagen. I think it’s the loveliest blue and white china available
    http://www.gearys.com/p-111735-blue-fluted-full-lace-dinnerware.aspx

    A tad expensive though!

But Johnson brothers do a cheaper version of it:

  26. Sorry I agree with retrodaddy too. I have 2 special wedgwood 12 place settings, one is countryware and the other is a really pretty one called debutante. But for everyday I have several sets of maxwell and williams plain white cashmere,(looooove that they have a mug and not teacup and saucer and yes giant kitchen and plenty of space) I have been fairly happy with this, even though some of the finish has worn off the bowls (kid sized little ones bought separately) I replaced many bowls – which we use ALL the time, and break heaps of with the plain white corelle ones from woolies and coles. They are absolutely fantastic, break resistant glass and TOUGH and I can thoroughly recommend these for little children. They sell sets in BIG W . I think keep the pretty plates for your accents, -cake and afternoon tea plates and teapots etc. and have plain white for your everyday, much less fussing and worrying over breakages!

  27. I’m with retro daddy on this! At the cost of some of those, to me they could be a “special occasion” set (although I’ve never understood the “best” dinner service thing, I think the good stuff should come out every day!). I’d just go to Target and get a couple of basic white sets! Our 12 person Denby ended up at the holiday house and was replaced with something neutral that goes with everything but I guess it depends on if your tastes change or you could live with a pattern long term. (Petite Fleur is lovely though!)

  28. Well you do have expensive taste, I do have a set of Villeroy and Boch- Burgenland-love my blue and white,Eschenbach-In Living Color,I had to get this one,I`m a quilter and for every day Polish pottery mix ,no not polish but german .
