still dreaming + hexagons

Another busy day here. Yesterday I had to stop thinking about the southern highlands and focus on getting through my list of jobs. I really think I left my heart down there. In good news, we are going down there (again) this Saturday to look at some open houses (she squeals and jumps around like a crazy lady). I have decided to think about it like moving to another suburb – 90 minutes from here rather than a huger than huge change. When you think about it like that, well it’s not so scary. And it’s been a long dream of ours to move to the english countryside so I kind of feel that it’s a nice local version.

And with so many things to think about I really just am itching for some craft time. And I’ll have to keep dreaming of picking up my hexagons and doing a few today because school holidays are keeping me busy, busy, busy. A whole new delivery of charm squares arrived about a fortnight ago and they are florally perfect for my hexagon quilt. I like that I can just pick it up when I need to.
progress on one
And this is what we’re aiming for…………..it’s really coming along nicely and is going to be my biggest quilting project to date.

This is the Grandmother’s Flower Garden from Rosalie Quinlan’s ‘A Stitch in Time’ book. If you’re not ‘hexagoning’ (that is not a real word!) then you should get started as it is the perfect craft for the couch on these cooler nights.

  1. I can absolutely see you as a country girl Corrie! 😀

  2. The hex’s look great! I am wanting to attempt hex’s – do you cut them to the shape of the hex or can you leave them as a square?

  3. Looking fairly fantastical Corrie (that’s not a real word either). How do you do hexagons? I have been meaning to get on the hexagon band wagon but am a bit confused? Do you have a tutorial somewhere on retromummy or could you do one? I think I saw the original one in notebook once upon a time? I totally want a ‘holiday cottage’ in the English countryside, yeah right! Have been watching far too much Escape to the Country on Friday nights dreaming of thatch roof and stone walls.

  4. I love the Southern Highlands. It’s just country enough without being too country. Beautiful in Autumn.

  5. Beautiful job so far….It is going to look great when you are finished.
    smiles…Tammy

  6. I grew up in the Highlands. My parents’ house (not one I grew up in) is for sale now. It has 5 bedrooms – you would fit!

  7. The Southern Highlands is a wonderful place to live and raise a family. One tip for you from a local – consider living in one of the surrounding villages and not in Bowral. Bundanoon is a wonderful town with a fantastic school.

  8. Hi Corrie
I love hexagoning too and so I have a handy hint for you that I have been using.
I have been using 1″ hexagon papers – I cut a 2 1/2″ square of fabric then place the hexagon paper on it then using a sewline glue pen glue around each edge and fold over the fabric…..
It seems to working well and I don’t have to tact the papers on. The papers then just pop out when you are done….

Happy house hunting and happy hexagoning……

    Angela

  9. Every time I see hexies I feel so inspired to give them a go–and yours are so delightful! Is it all hand sewing, or can I get around that part somehow? :)

  10. Just thought we would drop you a line to let you know that we at Gingerbread Folk love your blog. Very inspiring. Feel free to check out ours! http://gingerbreadfolk.blogspot.com

  11. I live in Texas, but would SO love to live in the country up near Dallas by my grandbabies. I don’t like being 6 hours away from them!

Ohhhh, your hexies are beautiful! I haven’t tried these yet, either, but have some papers ordered and plan to once they are in. I have no clue what I’m doing, so will just wing it unless I find a tutorial somewhere. I’m sure there is one out there somewhere.

    I so love your blog!

  12. My heart just skipped a beat to hear you’re heading down to see some open houses!!! I hope you find the perfect one and Retro Daddy just can’t say no!!! So excited for you! : )

  13. That looks really cool Corrie! I think one of these days I might have to give it a go. :) Very pretty fabric.
Do you like cold winters? I wonder will 90 mins south make a difference in the temperature of things?

  14. Corrie – old friends moved down to Burradoo from Bondi. But the only way they could do it was by having a little unit in the city as well. The husband couldn’t do the drive to Sydney every day (he stayed at the unit for about 3 nights a week). Not sure I would either with the M5 the way it is at the moment. If the M5 improves, it might be doable.

  15. Good luck with your proposed move, I live in the English countryside and it’s a wonderful place to be.

I started some hexagons a while back, first attempt, and they are such fun to make, yours are lovely.

  17. oh i love your little hexies, I am so tempted to try doing some. Beautiful colours as well.

  18. if you love the countryside what better to go with it than Granny’s flower garden? This quilt is looking good!

  19. What a nice flower quilt! Such wonderful beautiful idea

  20. Oooh no you are moving to the country….how about a sea change Collaroy, Narrabeen, Newport, Avalon….

  21. I love the country ideal!! Funny thing is that I do live in the country but in a reasonably large town but still crave more… Bowral has always seemed divine to me so good luck with the house hunting. Love the hexies, may have to try some of them. With a six week old I don’t seem to getting much else done!!

  22. Corrie, you NEED to jump on my friend Amy’s blog: lifewithsoul.blogspot.com she is living. the. dream. i tells ya! (you might already know her blog, just thought i’d mention it)

  23. Are you sure about rural England? Imagine having night descend from 4pm and stay until 8 am right through Christmas and into January?

Of course the upside is daylight until 10:30pm and then beginning again @4am in the Summer. Sadly the warmth and sunshine is never as consistent.

Definitely head for the NSW counryside until the smalls turn into bigs and you can run away to England to craft through the WInter gloom in peace.

  28. I love doing hand-stitching so hexies are perfect for me. I’ve got a few projects on the go in different colourways. I’m tempted to start one like yours because those bright colours are so uplifting!

I’ve been dreaming about moving to the country for way too many years. I’ve made do with weekend visits to the Highlands but it’s just not enough. Still, I gotta earn a living …

Sigh. Back to doing my hexies …

  29. Oh my goodness, I just looked at the Sydney Morning Herald online and noticed that today’s column about real estate is called “Would you, could you, move to the country?”.

    It’s a sign!

  30. I have moved to the country, 90 mins from Perth and have to say I love it. Ive discovered sewing, you, others and it’s been such a great change for the kids. They are rather loud when we get to town though! Good luck x

  31. It’s going to be real pretty!

  32. I just love that we’re moving closer to each other. Yippee!! I’m a bit hexagon mad too, can’t wait to put them together.
My sister lives in Bowral, has never looked back, raising 3 happy children (with their French daddy & amazing outlook in life) they are always in gum boots with arms filled with firewood. Love it!! Love Posie

  33. So pretty and coming along nicely :)

  34. Lovely fabrics. Good luck Saturday! Tracee xx

  35. fantastic! I had a little browse on domain.com and was very impressed about what we could afford down there! We’d easily have room for a sixth :-)

  36. Have you thought of moving even further? We live in Armidale halfway between Sydney and Brisbane and it is glorious! 4 distinct seasons, beautiful climate, so many great schools to choose from, no traffic, peaceful, affordable housing…we love it!! So many of my friends have moved here from Syd and wished they had done it sooner. Some husbands still fly to Syd once a week for work however there are many who just use the interne or set up their business heret.. anyway just a thought. Love your blog. Happy Easter. Felicity

  37. Hi Corrie

I’m sure your quilt will be lovely when finished, just like the rest of your projects!!
