the mummy purse

I know that there are more pressing issues in the world right now but I have to share with you the embarrassing purse situation I had going on. I really needed a new purse well over a year ago when the clasp broke off, then about 6 months later the zipper went and coins would fly everywhere and then about a month ago the credit card section broke and cards were flying all over my handbag every day. Add to that stickers put on there by keira and loose threads everywhere and it was looking very tired.
My creation
I can’t believe I am sharing this picture with you! Embarrassing!
I recently took it to the hairdressers and plonked it down in front of me with my keys and then realised how embarrassingly old and broken it was looking and quickly put it in my lap. I mean honestly, purses do not have to cost a lot of money these days and I really don’t know why I haven’t bought another one.  But today I decided enough was enough. Just go into a shop and get yourself a new one, woman.
My creation
And now we are in purse heaven………….and it even has pretty pink lining inside which keira will appreciate. I did have a good 5 minutes of indecision…………..did I want the silver lining but that would mean getting a white wallet? Decisions, decisions but for $30 I am very happy. And $30 I could have justified a long time ago. Please tell me your purse has seen better days and that it’s not just me……………….

  1. mine is currently just a small wallet in the diaper bag

  2. Oh it’s definitely not just you! I’ve recently updated mine not long ago, so the one I have at the moment is not too bad…but the one I was replacing…omg it was so not good!! Holes in it…stitching undone…zipper broken…the plastic in front of the photo section was cracked…the list just goes on and on!

I just seem to use them to death and I find myself getting very attached to them, then find it hard to part ways with them…a bit silly I know, but that’s just me! :)

  3. I still have the same filofax my husband bought me when i was a teenager, so i could coordinate my studies, part time jobs & him in an orderly fashion. I could not live without it!! I use simple Fossil purses for cosmetics & a little coin purse, plus a Posie PVC coin purse for business cards, which all sit nicely in my new birthday handbag, yippee!! I just can’t imagine starting with a whole new wallet, my filofax is going so strong after 17 years, my life is in there. You made a cute purchase & seriously inexpensive, great work!! Love Posie

  4. Ha Corrie its not just you. My clip broke long long ago, then went the zip probably a year ago now coin zip has gone. I even have a new purse bought for me by my daughter but still I hold on to the old one. I really like my old one, it is so pretty and I can’t face the whole re arranging process. It is getting desperate though. xx Chrisb.

  5. I am the same! I just recently replaces my old purse as it was embarrassingly tattered.

I have had a big chunky “mum” purse for a few years now, and always overfill it so I can’t even close it.

I would love a cute and pretty purse like yours- lovely!

  6. I am the same.. the lining is ripped and the zipper pull is long gone. I have ordered a new one through Brands Exclusive so now I am playing the waiting game!

  7. Purses are one of those ‘big bang for your bucks’ items. Minimal spend, maximum use, maximum enjoyment. You’ve totally nailed it! x

  8. Nope. It’s just you! 😉

Kidding!!!!! I have about 7 wallets (can’t find ‘just the right one’) but I have been known to carry around a lanyard (on my keychain, helps me not lose my keys) that was ripped, stained, missing bits, tied in knots, sucked on by children, stepped on by other children for months before finally getting a new one. Replacement cost: $10! It’s the sign of a busy Mom who is preoccupied with loving on her babies … that’s my story and I’m sticking to it! 😉

  9. Haha mines ripped in two places, clasp doesn’t stay shut, and looks similar to yours. My problem is different though. I’ve been looking for a new purse for over a year now. Can’t find any that I like that have enough slots for all my cards and bits and pieces, that don’t look like granny purses!!! It’s rather annoying!

  10. Absolutely been there and dun that, even to hiding it at the hairdressers. To think that I used to own $80 Oroton purses 25-30 years ago when I was young and single!! Now I have an $8 one that looks as good as the previous $45 one and I am picking up brand new ones in the op shops for $1 and handing them on to my friends. Maybe I should put one aside just in case. Love that soft pink. Cherrie

  11. Don’t feel too bad. I have a shabby looking billabong wallet that I bought in 1997 (while I was a Uni student)
I SO LOVE your new one! It’s gorgeous. Well done Retro Mummy!!!

  12. My wonderful 23 year old son bought me a new purse for Christmas and I love it, it is by Oroton and I would not have spend as much, but he said I deserve it.

    Kids are wonderful, aren’t they?
    Christine

  13. Still using and loving my 15 year old Oroton one. Ok, if may be a slightly different colour than when I bought it, but everything still works.

  14. Um, I must confess my old purse is looking a lot like your old one. It has definitely seen better days. The coin zipper broke years ago so now I have to use a separate coin purse. My cards often go flying about the supermarket (oh heck, I practically donate most of our funds there anyway, why not have all my cards too!). Even my hubby says I need a new one. Just haven’t found the one I want. Oh well, I have gotten a good 15 years out of the current one. So it has served me well. Jacinta

  15. Ok, so I have just had one of those serendipitous moments. Having just minutes ago posted here about my pathetically sad wallet. I remebered I had a package that arrived today that I hadn’t opened. Inside was a lovely card and present from a dear friend of mine. You know what the present was? A wallet!!! How is that? Ok, time to play the sci-fi music. Oh is it gorgeous too. But I am totally weirded out at the same time. Jacinta

  16. My wallet had been a disaster for a good 6 months. The coin purse part was coming apart so coins kept falling out everywhere, the sides were split and of course there were a million threaded coming out. Thankfully my mum came to my rescue and bought me a new Radley one for Christmas! Phew. So you are most definitely not alone!

  17. I am not surprised with those cute looking babies, the stickers and all that you feel sentimental about your old purse. I know I would. But look at the lovely new one – it is time to move on but make sure you move the babies in with you…:D

    Nicky

  18. I have a very nice purse at the moment that has seemed to lasted for ages, but normally when they do wear out I’m so indecisive about what I want, and can’t find one I like that buy the time I do replace it, it ends up looking like yours!!

  19. no, it’s not just you! Mine is having a lot of trouble zipping up, it’s made of fabric so it’s a bit dirty in patches and the clasp is rusty! Getting a new one though is definitely on my to-do list before I go to France next month!

  20. Positive post! Congratulations on your new purchase!!

  21. Oh it looks like one from Colette, I too have just got a new one and I love mine!!!

  22. It took me just as longto replace mine. I could not keep it shut and seems were spliting.

  23. Oh I always wait until everything has either popped, split or fallen off when it comes to my wallets/purses. My current one is a Sportsgirl purchase of all things. But I like the size, the colour and it does the job.
I’ve just got to remember to be more vigilant with my inventory of it… I find myself harbouring receipts, loyalty cards to seventy different shops/outlets and bus tickets from a time when I used to catch the bus. Oh and ATM balance print outs… I swear they breed in there!
Lovely looking new purse you have there Retromummy!

  24. I had the same problem about 12 months ago. Zippers broken coins falling out all the time not to mention the number of times they went flying everywhere, like th eother lady said bank atm slips I’m sure breeed in there, clean it out then it’s just as full. So decided to by another took me months as I couldn’t find one that fitted everything, and with out looking like a grandma purse. Finally found one and it’s still going strong. Apart from the slips etc that keep breeding :)Your new purse is great. Cheryl

  25. My problem is the number of cards! Try this: http://sites.google.com/site/aspoonfullofsugargirls/aspoonfulofsugar loyalty card tutorial!

  26. I’ve got serious purse envy now! Why do kids always stick stickers in the worst places? My son stuck a Ginormica from Monsters vs Aliens on my laptop and it makes people giggle on trains – grr!

  27. i have the most gorgeous purse from the lovely Cath Kidston, I love love love it and was worth the overpriced amount for the happy feeling it gives me!

  28. hi corrie, your’e not alone! with me, its my handbag. and as a girl whose fav accessory has always been her handbag (apart from my gorgeous 2 year old), its like omg how embarrassing. i was using one with a broken strap for like a week before I finally changed it (and yes the strap was long and hanging down). Not a good look. And I even have a closet full of perfectly good bags…I finally swapped over to a better looking one this week :) Natalie

  29. Hey – you have my old wallet! I loved my JAG purse – perfect size and fitted everything in it whilst also being able to squeeze into the smaller pockets in the nappy bag or pram.

But a trip to Sydeny with a girlfriend last year saw me splashing out on a very colourful FOSSIL wallet – same size as your new one!! And I love it.

Hey – does this count as another reason why I need to come an meet you at Westfields?? Ha, ha.
