the finer details

Wow, thanks everyone for getting involved and offering to help out! You guys are just amazing and after posie left here last night after a few hours chatting, I opened my inbox to find 20 gazillion emails from you all. I love how you want to help out. Heck I just love you guys. It seems we all feel the same way about doing something very personal. For some (or a lot) of us we are home with small children making volunteering in person very hard or impossible to do.
Anyway I went to bed and realised I better get some finer details out there to help you out so here are some Q&A which will hopefully help out. If you have anything to ask or suggest just let me know and I’ll add it.
great youtube tutorial on making wonky log cabins
When do you want the blocks? when you’ve finished making them! I think a 3 week deadline (early february) to receive blocks and late feb to have all of our quilts done and ready to go. If you can’t do a block or two in this time don’t worry, we’ll get there. It’s just a loose guide especially as Keira starts school in February so I could be kidding myself! Whatever happens, we’ll get there!

Where do I send the blocks? that will be included in an email to you
Do you mean 12 inch or 12 1/2 inch blocks? I’m confused. Thanks for asking! Ok so I would love it if the quilt blocks you give me are 12 1/2 inches. This means if you’re looking to do a pattern it will say 12 inch finished block – which means when the whole quilt top is put together your quilt block measures 12 inches. In other words 12 1/2 inches less 1/4 inch seam allowance all the way around! I hope that clarifies it for everyone. If yours are measuring 12 inches don’t worry we can put them together in one quilt and trim a few larger ones to co-ordinate. Please make sure this is a pleasant, happy, warm and fuzzy experience – this is not MasterQuilt!

I’ve never made a block before? No problem – here are some great ideas below. Julie and I also thought we might offer a few suggestions too…..mine will come….you know when I get a spare 5 minutes. And please note that these suggestions below are for making a block/quilt to donate and not for auction/sale where copyright will apply. Always do the right thing by the pattern designer and ask first if you want to auction something by another designer.

I’m not very good at quilting? Neither am I, have a go, use nice fabric and make something you would love to receive.

I want to help you quilt the quilts! Yay! Now that I realise the organisation involved I am going to need some quilters! If you have batting at your house/access to batting then I’ll just post out the blocks to make a quilt. Here is a quilt I put together for the bushfire victims of Victoria, everyone used different colours and designs but all quilting cottons. I backed this one in polar fleece which makes them nice and quick and you don’t need to quilt it. I backed it with fleece and knotted some embroidery thread into the corner of each block!

I have backing fabrics! OK,  no one asked this question, I just made it up because I’m guessing we all have some fabric in our stash that we don’t love too much anymore or forgot what we were going to use it for. It could make a great backing pieced together with other fabrics so pop it in with your blocks.
What fabric should I use?…OK, again, I made this one up……..if you’re making blocks try to use 100% cotton where possible as the quilts will last longer and it will ensure our quilts are made of the same fabrics. A cotton/linen blend is fine in there too. If you’re making an entire quilt yourself use what you like.
Do you have a button I can share on my blog? Yep, here we go.

Ok well I have a date with a zumba class this morning, I’ve decided I must try it out and see what all the hype is about and will definitely be the totally unco-ordinated lady up the back of the class going the opposite direction to everyone else. I love this youtube video- watch the lady in the green tee – that will be me! I know it!

this isn’t my zumba class btw, I am not the guy/girl in black with the sweatband!

  1. you are awesome Corrie! and yes i would be the one in the green t-shirt up the back too dreaming I was the lady up the front leading the group!

good luck with your class this morning :)

    Naomi x

  2. Good luck with the class!

  3. Hi Corrie
I wouls love to help out with the quilts! You girls are just amazing.
I’m a complete novice with no understanding of blocks etc so I’ll send you a lap/cot quilt if that’s ok.
    Thanks for organising.
    Jenny

  4. Great info Corrie.
Can’t wait to hear all about the Zumba class, I’ve been hearing a lot about it too, but fear I’d be so confused that I’d end up just jogging on the spot. I’d totally be the person up the back going in the wrong direction. 😉

  5. You really are amazing Corrie…I was a bit hesitant about doing a quilt as I have never done one before so I have joined forces with another blogger asking for softies to be made for children….much more comfortable in this area :)

    Good luck at Zumba
    x

  6. Hi Corrie, count me in. I would love to make a block. I’ve been wondering what to do all week – all of these fabulous auctions in blogland – I don’t think I could make anything worth bidding on!

My block will be pretty simple as I am a novice. I’ll include some fabric for backing too. I would offer to make up a quilt but I’ve only made 2 quilts in my life (and they were VERY imperfect!) and I would hate to stuff it up! But if you find that you really need another helper, sign me up. I’ll do my best!

  7. I haven’t decided what I’m going to make yet, but you’ll be receiving a package of quilty goodness from me.

Born and raised in QLD, living in Victoria. I want to share the love.

  8. Count me in Corrie. I hope to make a few blocks and send them your way. Good luck with Zumba. I’ve never tried it but i’ve heard it’s fun and fantastic for weight loss. Maybe after this baby…
    Cheers, Linda

  9. Hi Corrie this all sounds wonderful thanks for organising. I was thinking that, due to the climate in Queensland being a little warmer than other parts of the country, we could do some cot size / lap rugs backed with flannel or fleece, but with no batting. Do you think that would be ok?

Oh, and I’ll make sure that I send up some stuff for the little boys out there. I just found some good stuff in my stash

    Thanks again Lyn x

  10. Count me in! I’m a novice, too. Thanks for organizing this!

  11. Thank you for coordinating this. I was thinking of doing something too but I have just posted about you on my blog and hope to encourage some more support. Hugs Khris

  12. Oh god, that Zumba is even more complicated than this whole quilt block business… good luck with it all!! x

  13. Hey Corrie – fantastic effort, you really are amazing!! I had Jenny from Ohjoh in the shop this morning getting fabric for her quilt so word is getting out!! I would love to make you a quilt and can help out putting some blocks together later if you need. So heartwarming to see everyone pitching in!!

  14. Hi Corrie,
Just adding my name and details to the growing list of helpers. 3 little ones in bed so I am off to make my blocks now!

  15. Hi Corrie, I find making quilts very daunting…I’ve made a couple of little ones but the quilting process is just a bit much for me. I have been thinking that I would love to make some cushions though…as I love making cushions. So I was wondering if there was anybody else like me that reads your blog. If so…and if it’s alright with you…they can leave a comment on my blog or find my email on my blogsite and indicate whether they would like to join with me and make some cushions. Is that too much with the quilts? Or do you think it would be ok?

  16. Huge giggles about Zumba, fabulous work about explaining the quilt blocks, i’m onto it.
Thanks for chatting last night, our 8 children just mix to perfection. See you next time i’m in Sydney, love Posie

  17. Hi Corrie.
Just back from holidays so a little late in responding to this great cause.
Count me in for some blocks (at least). I’ll see what I can come up with over the next couple of weeks.
    Send me your address love.
    Andi x

  18. Hi Corrie, Great job, once again. I’ve added your button to my blog. I am hosting a dolly drive in which I’m hoping to send dolls and softies to the Lockyer Valley. I am still trying to get contacts on where to send them as these areas are totally devastated, some residents still can’t return.

I was wondering if you could mention it on your blog or maybe just add my button to your side bar. You have a lot of followers and and I don’t. I just want to get the word out there.

All of the details are on my blog.

    Thanks so much:)
    Jacki

By the way, I hope you zumba class went well, I don’t dare try it!

  19. Hi Corrie
What a fabulous idea, please count me in & I’ll spread the word here in the UK amongst my quilting friends.
We’ve all watched the dreadful flood reports recently & feel so helpless, so this would be a great way to contribute.

Let me know where to send them please. CQ xx

  20. thanks for organising this!
I have made up some wonky log cabin blocks and hope to get some more done over the next two weeks. Please email me (via my blog) with the address to post blocks to 😉

  21. Corrie – I’d love to be able to help out with a couple of blocks for your “quilts for queensland”! Please email me the details (should eb linked to my comment)!

  22. Hi Corrie,
Thanks for organising this. I’m a novice too, but I’ve almost completed 4 (albeit imperfect) blocks for you. Could you please send me the mailing details? Thanks. Jenny

  23. I would love to help out and make some blocks.

    Nic xxx

My friend Nell has already put her name down, so I might arrange with to send them all in together.
