waiting, waiting

I know you’ve been waiting for me to draw winners of the sweet broderie giveaway and they are coming later today, I promise. It’s been a tough week so far with retro daddy away and Finn’s asthma and croup seeing him back on the redipred (for the 3rd time). I’ve been sleeping on the couch so I can keep a close eye on him and am pooped!!!!!!! But on a happier note let’s look at my favourite flower, the hydrangea! One of the nice surprises when we bought this house was when I discovered a huge plant out the back AFTER we had moved in. We don’t really have a backyard, we have a large house and pool instead but having this gorgeous flowering plant out the back makes up for the lack of a yard.

I can't wait for these babies to bloom

and the little people who are partial to picking leaves off everything out the back are under strict instructions to leave mummy’s plant alone. Because everyday without fail I come out to inspect how my pretty flowers are going. I can’t wait till they are all opened up……………

waiting for my pretty hydrangeas

My second most favourite flower might have to be a gardenia! We only have one plant out the back but I could smell that flower for hours…………………….

gardenia in my garden

What’s your favourite flower? I know some of you don’t share my love of the hydrangea – what is wrong with you people???

  1. You’re lucky to have such lovely plants! I’m fond of peonies, and bearded irises, but really, I’m happy with anything that will grow for me!

  2. Hydrangeas are divine bushes, there are so many pretty hybrids these days too…i have a white garden with white hydrangea of course, white waratah i have just planted and i had intended on transplanting my mini gardenias in there as well as they are not getting enough sun where they are. Those who garden live longer they say…sweet dayx

  3. I’m a gardenia girl all the way.
You can’ go past that fragrance!!

  4. I love the purple, but I like all flowers.
My hydrangea has flourished, it is very beautiful!
Your little one is well soon!
    A hug!

  5. They are my favourite too – have two quilts with Lakehouses hydrangea fabric and a stash of it still to use.

  6. well, i’m one to share the hydrangea love with! and – the gardenia! oh that’s a sweet fragrant flower.. and totally love roses – mmmm…
    hoping you restore quickly :)

  7. I love Hydrangeas, they (along with Agapanthus) mean summer for me. Every year I buy a potted Hydrangea that stays on the verandah for all of summer/autumn, then it gets planted somewhere..! I think we have about 20 scattered around now, I love Gardenia’s too but it’s way too frosty for them here, shame..

  8. Ooh, hydrangeas are one of my favorites too – I had them in my wedding bouquet! My other favorite flower is the tulip – we have a huge tulip festival here in WA. I love all the colors.
And gardenias – love the smell!
Sorry about the croupy little one – we’re going through that right now (although without the asthma). I’m going on very little sleep as well. Hope all is better soon!

  9. we have one hydrangea down the back of our yard too. For years it has been there, struggling along with attacks by possums, bandicoots and boys. Then mum and I attacked the back corner where it lives with some new plantings and a teensy bit of attendance (ie mum hacked it back to virtually nothing). This year? It is covered in the most glorious soft pink blossoms.

Hydrangeas are the flower of my youth, the first house we lived in which I truly remember had three or four well established (read massive) hydrangeas in the front garden. Every year they blossomed in glorious pinks and blues and purples. Absolutely stunning. Having one in our yard now is so good for my soul. And how the flowers are that remarkable green before deciding what colour to turn this year – well, so clever.

Gardenias do come in a close second – I have two different varieties from when we only had one child (imagine!) and have recently released them from their pots and put them in the garden. I thought one had given up with shock but noticed yesterday it is covered in new shoots of promise. Excitement.

I suspect neither with flower this year due to being relocated but know they will probably blossom more than every before in years to come.

Listen to me – the fact my mum adores gardening and spent most of my youth tending to the garden of whatever house we were living in clearly is now coming home to roost in her daughter.

  10. We must be on the same page today – I have just posted about hydrangeas too… my favourite and they’re back in fashion – I just wish I could remember where I read that!?

  11. I love both of those along with lilacs, roses and most all flowers.

  12. Oh you poor lovely living on no sleep. Poor asthma boy! xx

My favourites are the gardenias – ours are budding up like crazy and with a dozen bushes in our garden it gives up such a beautiful sweet aroma – only to be competing with the star jasmine too which is out in full force (my blog will have pics this afternoon).

I am partial to the hydrangea too – I love the really dark pink ones – one day I’ll get around to planting some and work out what soil treatment I need to do to get them that colour…

  13. Poppies are my favourite!

  14. I’m in Sydney and mine are in colour, as are those in the streets around me … I’m suprised yours hasn’t totally blossomed yet, must be shady? Go blue I say …

  15. My favourite flowers are sweet peas! Glad you have some happy plants living in your garden to give you a place to escape and enjoy!

  16. Oh my! You really have your hands full, Corrie (more than normal, that is). Asthma and croup = most unpleasant. I adore hydrangeas, gardenias, peonies, freesias, lisianthuses – I could go on and on. But I abhore gerberas and sunflowers. J x

  17. My favourite flower is a Gerbera Daisy. I love that they come in a variety of colours and they are bright and cheery.

I hope that your little guy is feeling better soon.

  18. I have to say that my absolute favourite flower is the tulip, such beautiful colors. I did have some when we first moved in here but my kelpie ate them, bulbs and all and so I havent bothered to try again. Maybe one day. I do hope Finn is better soon, asthma and croup are both bad enough let alone together. I used to sleep on the couch too when my kids were younger or I would sleep in their rooms with them so I knew they were okay.

  19. I LOVE peonies, they are soooo pretty, at the moment i am also in LOVE with the hot pink flowers on my super sweet strawberry plants!! But I must admit I am always a little tempted by the hydrangeas at the garden shops, I might need to get some soon, I love thte big cluster of flowers in vases, they are mood enhancing :)

  20. I love gardenia’s. The remind me of hot summer nights.

  21. Both my favourites too, but there are so many pretty flowers to choose from! I bought this ring for my hubby & kids to give to me for Christmas, as well as the little ladybird one (they are a bit smaller than they look in the photos though!) He also makes cute earrings:

I hope Finn gets better soon!

  22. I love hydrangeas too, especially the blue ones..but..I think my absolute favourites are the simple white daisy…just like in ‘You’ve Got Mail’…when Tom Hanks gives Meg Ryan the daisies! Get well soon, Finn.

  23. Gardenias are a big favourite of mine, and I always think of my (deceased) Opa when I smell them…..
    I also love Stargazer Lilies.
Our ‘garden’ is not very established though, so my favourite from the garden is the Star Jasmine.

  24. I love Jasmines!

  25. Yes hydrageas are sooo gorgeous, but not being a plant we can grow well here in Alice Springs, we instead go for frangipanis. Our yard is filled with all sorts of colours of these beautiful babies…white, pink, apricot, yellow, red! Love summer when these girls are in flower! and their frangrance can not be matched in my opinion :)

  26. Hydrangeas and Gardenias are the most beautiful flowers in any garden.

  27. yes I love them too, mine has burst into flower, a mauvy blue colour, still a small plant though.

  28. I loooove gardening. My favourite plants are Japanese Maples. I also love perennials, I don’t think I could say which is my favourite I like so many.

  29. My fav is the gardenia – the scent, the beautiful white bloom and the dark shiny leaves. love it!
Can’t wait to see what your flowers look like when they bloom.

Really sorry to hear about your wee one. I have a couple of kids that I have to really watch if they get sick, because then their breathing goes down hill, and it is off to the doctor or accident and emergency for the nebulizer.

    All the best

  30. Love white Hydrangeas the best. They are so elegant.
Am also a fan of the gardenia, but we only have a mini one. It is doing it’s best to stay alive and flower.
I am very partial to camelias, I think they are just gorgeous.

  31. Sorry to hear Finn has had asthma, it’s horrible enough to deal with – let alone when you have a new born. Hope the redipred does it’s job and clears his wheeze up.

I’m watching my hydrangers at the moment too! And gardenias are my favourite.

  32. Yes I love hydrangeas, they are beautiful. So sorry about little Finn, I know all about that scary breathing I also sleep with 1 eye open! Hope he’s feeling better.

  33. I love love love hydrangea’s. My hubby knows this and has planted 2 in the yard. I especially love it when they are blue. :-)

  34. these are both of my very very favorites!
