Losing myself in the 1800’s

I don’t watch a lot of TV, not even the news or current affairs anymore and it’s been a long while since I’ve fallen in love with a series. I think Big Love is the last one. Anyway, I was reading this book and Sally recommends watching Lark Rise to Candleford. One episode in and I was hooked. It just draws you in with the wonderful characters and story lines. Even the bigger kids of the house were hooked and looking forward to the next episodes. I ended up buying the DVD pack and managed to get my grandma through all of season 1 in one weekend.

Then I was on instagram and someone mentioned North & South on Netflix. In the space of 2 nights I watched all 4 episodes and was crying and oh so happy at the ending. Another beautiful mini series that just draws you in. North & South is also a history lesson as it takes you to the fictional town of Milton and the cotton mills. I found myself worrying about the starving children and whether the two main characters were finally going to fall in love.

What’s your favourite period drama right now? It can be a bit hard to find them on the Apple tv and I found Lark Rise on iTunes TV shows (until I realised it would be more economical to buy the complete DVD set) and North & South on Netflix and youtube here. I think next on my list is Cranford which also looks good……………

  4. Watch Outlander! It’s set in Scotland in the 1800’s! It is to die for!

  5. I’ve been watching All Creatures Great and Small on youtube. Love it

  6. Hi Corrie, I love your blogs and have followed for a long time. I admire your outlook on life. You amaze me at what you accomplish.
I am in my mid seventies and my daughter and I LOVED the Larkrise and also Cranford DVD.
We bought set of Gilmore Girls and it is a great family show.. You might look into it.
    Win

I loved North and South! Binge watched on Netflix during a school holiday and have watched it many times over since. Even read the book! Let me know what Cranford is like.

I’ve just watched all 7 seasons of Doc Martin over the last 4 weeks. I was totally sucked into the charming world of a small fishing village in Cornwall, and their grumpy doctor. If you haven’t watched it give it a try. First 3 seasons are on Netflix and I bought the remaining seasons on iTunes.

    • oh I’ve watched north and south again with my grandma I loved it so much. Will have to see Doc Martin I think I watched 1 episode once. I love when you can find great things on netflix to watch:)

  8. Hi Corrie, we loved North & South and Cranford, but have not seen Larkrise to Candlefordyet. I was in JBHiFi this morning and they have each series of Larkrise for $15.98 on a buy 2 get 1 free offer! Another favourite series my family have watched a few times is Bleak House.

  9. I LOVED Lark Rise to Candleford (“It’s my one weakness”) and also loved North and South. I think I have watched all the Netflix suggestions that are at the bottom of the North and South summary (before you press ‘play’ for it to start). The version of Emma on Netflix is Emma, as well as some other shows whose names elude me right now. Yay for Netflix and British period pieces! Oh – have you seen Call the Midwife?

    • yes love call the midwife! such a good show and storylines. I always get sucked in and can’t move for the next hour to find out what happens in the end! Some really stay with you

  10. Hi Corrie,

Have you ever watched ‘The Mill’ it was about a cotton mill in Lancashire in the 1900’s and was on C4 in the UK there have been about 4 series of it.
    xxxxx

  11. Oh period dramas are my absolute favourite genre! I loved North and South, too and was disappointed there were only 4 episodes! I also love Call the Midwife, Land girls, Anzac girls was amazing, Downton Abbey of course, Upstairs Downstairs on Netflix was quite good and also The Paradise. I’ve just finished Outlander– absolutely loved the story and setting but I found it a bit brutal compared to my usual viewing. I think I fast forwarded quite a bit of the last two episodes! I really want to know what hapoens next though, so am reading book two in the series. Hmm, I must add that all these shows have kept me busy for a very long time. Being a mama of four aged 8-2, there’s not a whole lot of time for binge watching ?. Hope you enjoy some of these titles! ???

    • ohhh I don’t know how I’ll go with brutal, thanks for the heads up. I agree not much time for watching and especially when I fall asleep getting a little person to sleep!

  12. Thank you for the recommendations! The first series of Poldark was great.

    • oh loved that, bought most of the books and must get stuck into them. The scenery and filming was breathtaking and he was nice to look at 😉

  13. Laurie-anne says:

    Downton Abbey is really good

  14. Grace Steven says:

If you love a good period drama you must watch A Place To Call Home.

    • my grandma was just telling me about it so I’ll have to see some episodes, she loved it and then I think it went to foxtel?
      thanks
      Corrie:)
