I love getting questions from my readers but I’m building up a bit of a backlog!!! So I’m going to work my way through them……………………..here is one, how do I bath 5 kids every night? And I know that when you have a little baby you wonder on how on earth are you going to get everyone bathed including that precious little newborn in the house.
Bathtime at our house involves 5 kids in the bathroom all at once. And it’s noisy, I’m convinced my neighbour can hear us each night. We collect towels, pj’s and nappies as we go and march upstairs together. We are lucky enough to have 3 bathrooms in our house but the bath is upstairs (at our last house the main bathroom was downstairs and it was fabulous, if I ever design a house for small children then do the main bathroom downstairs as it just works!).
I put the stair gate back on at the top of the stairs (safety first!), I walk along the corridor to the bathroom and the kids run, crawl, do wheelbarrows and carry on till we get there. I run the bath, kids strip down, they usually squeal and run up and down the hallway, I pump in a few squirts of bath wash, the big kids take it in turns or jump in the shower which is next to the bath, hair is washed if necessary and when I say get out it’s time to get out. The littlest ones are the last ones out, dried, dressed and they run around in the big kids bedrooms while I sort out dirty clothes, towels and clean up the bathroom. I get all the fun jobs in this house but once bath time is done I feel a bit more relaxed and know that bedtime and some peace and quiet is coming my way.
Now we have our system down pat. But anyone who has a newborn or remembers having a new baby in the house knows that the bath time routine is a little different. I actually get nervous bathing a new baby for the first time (you’d think I’d be an old hand) and I usually give that job to daddy as he has big hands and seems to do it so easily. Cue photo of baby in his daddy’s hands being bathed….this was emerson as a baby.
But generally we do our little babies on their own in a baby bath later at night and pop them off to bed straight after. Or if they are having a cranky day then bath them in the middle of the day when it’s quiet and the big kids are distracted. The baby graduates to the big bath (and crazy bath time) when they can sit up and play happily with the big kids. And it is crazy….at the moment emerson loves to stand up, try to get out of the bath himself and do big slip and slides up and down the tub……….
