the slow way to knit a baby cardigan

I’ve come to the realisation that I am definitely an all in one knitting fan. Don’t ask me to knit anything in 5 pieces like my current baby knit! I started this in march and it’s still going. It’s been dragging on. Some nights I knit a couple of rows and then realise I still have the other side to do or the other sleeve and my eyes get tired so I put it away. But it has special memories as I knit the entire back piece while my mum was in hospital for the last time.
one sleeve to go

Thankfully I’m now in the home stretch now that I’m up to the last sleeve but it’s been a struggle to get this finished. And let’s hope I’m having a girl because this was supposed to be for Elodie as a size 6 months but it won’t fit my delicate little flower now. And if you’re a patient or fast knitter then the pattern is from Patons Book 1306 Retro Babes (Australian Patons btw).

But to keep my spirits up I’ve already picked my next project, an all in one raglan cardigan from a cute little book 60 Quick Baby Knits. It’s a great book if you love knitting in 10 ply for babies. Quick. The ravelry details on that cardigan are here.

  1. Corrie its looking lovely. I remember when you originially posted about this one and i raced out and bought the book. Here is my finished one in blue. http://www.ravelry.com/projects/AngieClare/labour-of-love-textured-cardi

You inspired me to start knitting 18 months ago and I havent looked back. As well as sewing and having children it my absolute favourite thing to do.

I cant wait to see yours finished.

    Angie :)

  2. Hi Corrie,
I don’t know if you’ve ever tried this, but I knit the sleeves at the same time. I cast on twice with two balls of wool onto the same needle – that way they are worked together. It’s how my mum taught me, and it feels quicker as the sleeves are finished at the same time. Keep going – it looks fantastic!!

  3. I have done the same thing as Donna – easy for a baby knit as they fit well on a needle. Plus you don’t have to count rows and try to see if they are the same size. Tension usually stays the same too.

  4. lol, i have that same pattern pinned, not just for the sweet cardi – but for the darling dress!

  5. Yes I have to agree all in ones are the key to conitinuall knitting, have you tried the ones where you knit from the neck down on circular? They are so good and I have made heaps for my kids, they can be made into cardis too.

  6. such beautiful traditional knitting!
and the color is adorable …
    Barbara :)

  7. I know, stitching up is always a drag, my least favourite part – I love the tip about knitting both sleeves at the same time, must try that, can’t believe I have never tried it before, thanks so much!

  8. I just bought this pattern book, isn’t it great? I love this cardigan pattern and absolutely love the purple yarn you’ve used. Can’t wait to see it knitted up. Sam xox
