The Farmer’s Wife Sampler Quilt

Well it all started here…………………when I found this quilt on pinterest. I remember Kristine had been talking about the farmer’s wife sampler quilt on her blog but I obviously thought it was a project too big for me. But I’d been thinking I’d like a big project for 2012 now that I’d finished all the paper piecing of my hexagons.
found on my beloved pinterest here, original source here. Oh the picture with her grandma, adorable!
Isn’t it stunning? I tracked the book down and knew I had to have it and it comes with a CD that has the piecing templates. All 106 of them. But what I realised is that I don’t have to make all of them and that I could turn individual ones into different things if I wanted. But when the book arrived I realised the real joy lies in reading the letters. The letters from 1920’s farmers wives (from the US by the way). Here is a little excerpt from one of them:
My daughter, married to a farmer, would be the real centre of her home, the real partner of her husband – and each would be so happily busy in their little world that love triangles and divorce mills would have small chance at them…………..
The letters are so sweet and traditional and I’m itching to take the book up to bed tonight and read it cover to cover. Definitely one for the craft shelf (or bookcase if you’re like me). You can find more details on the author’s website here and the flickr group here is full of inspiration too. I picked up my copy on fishpond for $20 something but I see it’s on amazon here.  You won’t be disappointed. Trust me. A lovely book that I’ve instantly fallen for.

  1. I enjoy the book also! I have started making my own farmers wife quilt. I plan on doing the same with white around each block.

  2. I am sewing this wonderful Sampler, too and I love this Ideaof Background.I’ll use gray insted of white,it looks also lovely

  3. Süper bir çalışma elinize sağlık tebrikler..

  4. Hi Corrie, I have this book and mentioned to a friend of mine in Canada that I was going to start it and she warned that some of the templates in the book don’t work well. She sent me another copy that she has used reliably so I will forward those on to you in case you find them useful. Cheers

  5. It’s been on my list for a while … you’ve just inspired me to move it up the list, lol! … Though, as I am just starting my own ‘Dear Jane’ quilt I think I may be just buying the book for future use, lol!! One quilt of many tiny and differently pieced blocks is more than I can handle at once … especially since I am also doing others as well, lol!! Thanks for the mini ‘review’!!

  6. Hello Corrie what a lovely Farmers Wife Sampler .You could write and embroider in one of the blocks your own letter and place it in the quilt for an heirloom to pass down.I am doing Dear Jane quilt her letters are lovely also.

  7. Good choice. I am working on this one also but in country colorings. Just over half way now. It is a long and sometimes testing journey. I haven’t had any troubles with the templates on the CD but when you print them just make sure you print them at the original size otherwise you will have troubles. Looking forward to watching yours take shape.

  8. If you like this book take a look at Civil War Love letters Quilt. It’s also very interesting,

  9. I love & have this book too!! I have been very inspired by Pretty By Hand blog being done in Lecien Flower Sugar – it is just a dream…. have a look http://prettybyhand.com/blog/tag/fwqal – I have now quietly begun a stash of flower sugar – what a beautiful inspiration!!!!!!!

  10. What I love is the pictured quilt has modern colours and old templates. My New Years resolution is to finish stuff I have started so if I try this it will be 2013 or maybe 2014….

  11. Hi Corrie,
I’m waiting on my book too – I was recommended the Marti Michell templates that can be used to create most of the blocks – if you want the link, I can send it to you.

This is another of my “to do” list which should see some action as my little darling starts school in 2 weeks – she is so excited, I am excited for her but oh so sad that our years as a little “2 -some” are nearly over.
    bye for now
    Christine x

  12. I love this book – I bought it twelve mths ago but for the life of me I can’t decide on fabrics! I love the brights but should I go traditional? who knows? Flower sugar range would also be cute….

  13. it’s beautiful!

  14. your quilts are sensational, I wish to learn how to quilt but I don’t even know how to sew!!! I tried looking up hand quilting for beginners but I have no clue where to start from. Any tips for someone who wishes to start quilting but doesn’t know how to sew? I only know how to cross stitch :/

  15. I wanted to compose you that bit of word to thank you very much over again on the splendid information you have provided on this website. It has been surprisingly open-handed of you to allow extensively precisely what many people might have supplied as an ebook in order to make some money for themselves, primarily considering the fact that you might have done it if you desired. These good ideas likewise served as the good way to be certain that other people online have the identical dream just like my personal own to figure out a good deal more with regards to this issue. I am certain there are several more pleasant occasions up front for people who view your blog post.
